Boot Error message "Checkpoint D0"

When I start up my xps 435mt right after the Dell Splash Screen I get the following message:

"Alert previous attempts boot this sytem have failed at checkpoint D0"

Working with Dell we have replaced the motherboard and hard drive and updated the BIOS.

Two days latter i Received the message again. I now have the Tech coming back with the following items: Motherboard, Memory Chips and new Video Card.

Has anyone have this problem?

Can someone tell me what Checkpoint D0 is looking at on the system to create the error.

Don

**UPDATE AND EDIT FROM DELL**

Please update to BIOS revision 1.1.4, which was web posted today to address this issue.

" My system seems to only freeze during boot up once at a time.  Never twice in a row.   I can shut down the computer during a freeze and when I attempt to reboot there is never a doubt that it will boot up correctly the second attempt.  Is there any significance to this?  Has anyone had there system freeze twice in a row? "

I experience the exact same thing. The system will suddenly reboot or blue screen around the windows logo and then on the next attempt it will give the checkpoint error followed by the screen that lets you know the system didn't shut down properly. I can at that point select start windows normally and it works on 2nd attempt.

Over time i have started seeing some blue screens in windows usually within a minute or 2 of the initial boot. It seems to work ok on 2nd boot after one of those crashes as well.

The only time my system wont boot on the first attempt is when I have my USB WD500 MYBOOK plugged in. But it ALWAYS boots on the second attempt with it plugged in.

Had this Checkpoint d0problem out of the box... Thank goodness for Costco concierge.. Although they really can't do much about the issue.  It's surprising how much difference it makes when a vendor at least appears to care.  Every morning when I get to work the first thing I have to do is say a little prayer and try to reboot .  It takes at least 2 tries and sometimes 3 to get the OS running.  There is a difference in the sound that the computer makes when it's going to go all the way to a full boot up.  You can hear the CPU fan ( I believe its that fan) spin up.  When I hear that sound I know right away I'll get a boot up.  I don't have a clue if that is significant but it's my experience.  My theory is there is a board level intermittent failure to power up the CPU..causing boot failures..just my theory.

So far, thanks to Costco concierge,  I've had a 2 hr call with a very nice Dell person, who has about 1200 words of English vocabulary.  He led me through their diagnostic procedures:  Removed and replaced cmos battery.  Hopped on one leg in a counterclockwise direction and barked at the moon..etc.

After satisfying the Dell rep that the diagnostic protocols weren't gettting it done, we scheduled a home visit from Dell service.  They did the whole drill..remove and replace RAM chips, replaced motherboard etc etc...  Offered me a new hard drive too, but I have about $1200 worth of Photoshop software, which would have left with the hard drive.  Dealing with Adobe is an order of magnitude more problematic than Dell.

The service rep, after all that, got a checkpoint D0 on the first boot attempt. I told the concierge that the computer is faulty and that it has all the KNOWN issues of this model, which Dell seems to be in denial about.   By the time all this has gone by, the return period for Costco has elapsed.  I aggressively (daily) back up all data on external hard drives, because you never know. . ..

I have become convinced that the flaw is somewhere in the bootup power sequence in the motherboard... Not smart enough to know if that's CMOS or board level issue.  I have also learned through lifes experiences  that just because a person or a company is incompetent, that doesn't make them evil..

This is currently under investigation. We are sorry for the delay but this will take time to isolate the root cause.

For testing, if listed, remove the version of the IMSM 8.9.0.1023 (Intel Matrix Storage Manager) and reinstall the Vista IMSM 8.5.0.1032. Restart the PC when done. Check for the Boot Error Checkpoint Messages.

I have a studio XPS 8000, and I can not install the drivers. Not supported my computer says.

Also the problem is before windows have a chance to load any drivers so I do not believe this helps, I believe this is a hardware / Bios related problem.

Thanks Bill.  BIOS Updated and I've set my PC to sleep-enabled.

I will keep my fingers crossed for no reboot or Photoshop symptoms.

Happy holidays to you and your family.

Bill B. -

My experience to date: Successfully flashed 435MT BIOS to 1.1.4. Received Checkpoint B1 message after automatic reboot after flashing. Put computer to sleep, awakened it and rebooted: no message. Repeated that sequence: no message. Changed Power Options to allow automatic sleep after 5 minutes. After awakening computer, rebooted: no message.

So far so good, but I will check again tomorrow morning after the overnight sleep -- that's when I generally got the messages

I also flashed 435mt bios to 1.1.4.  I have rebooted 7-8 times since.  The computer has frozen on boot up every single time.  I also  saw the computer attempt to go into sleep mode only to re-awaken seconds later.  Before bios 1.1.4 the computer froze only about half as much.  It has actually made my system perform worse.  I will continue using the system for a few weeks to give it some time, but it would be nice to know how to revert back to the old bios.

I flashed the bios in my xps 8000 tonite and got an initialization error blue screen on first reboot but its rebooted ok a couple times since. I hate to be negative but i don't feel too confident about this fixing this issue. Ill check back after a day or two.

DELL,

My Studio 435mt has had the D0 error and every other error posted in this particular forum.  I have also had issues with power-on restart not working without several attempts.  Please see my previous posts on these issues.

I updated my BIOS to version 1.1.4 the other day and have had no problems since.  My computer goes to sleep as it should, wakes as it should and boots from power-off with no issues.  I have had NO ERRORS since updating the BIOS.  I'll keep monitoring the situation but for now all problems seemed to be resolved.

Thanks, Jim

The link to BIOS 1.1.4 no longer works, and the latest available BIOS listed for my service tag has reverted back to 1.1.3. Someone from Dell should explain why 1.1.4 was pulled. One must assume there is a problem with it and we need to know what that problem is.
