Boot failure at checkpoint [Ithr]

I rebooted my PC a few weeks ago and it froze at the first screen (the one with the big Dell logo). I turned it off, waited a bit and tried again, but with the same result. Turned it off and then back on again and this time I got a message stating that "Previous attempts to boot this computer have failed at checkpoint [Ithr]". I tried to reboot a couple more times but this message is all I got so I turned it off and left it. Several hours later I turned it on and got the message again, but this time it went on with the boot sequence and caome on up. It has been running OK since. My question is what does checkpoint [Ithr] mean and what should I do if this happens again? Any help greatly appreciated.

I did a Google search and got many hits. It sounds like this is a Dell issue. Here is one that sound promising:

Previous attempts at booting this sytem have failed at checkpoint [Ithr] contact Dell.

This issue is solved by setting the USB keyboard and Mouse in the "correct" USB ports.
On back if computer there is 3 USB ports, then undernith a nic and 2 USB ports.
Setting keybord next to NIC and then mouse should remove error msg.

If this does not correct issue try disabeling boot from USB in BIOS.

If none of these steps help you should contact Dell Support for Motherboard replacment.

I got the error a number of months ago on my D4700.

I reinstalled the chipset drivers. I haven't had a problem since.

Thanks for the reply. I haven't heard this suggestion before but it might be worth a try. Thanks.

"Peter, thanks for the response. I've done some research on my own and it seems like there is no definitive answer to this problem. It could be overheating, a memory chip problem, a USB controller problem or the MB itself. I can't access Dell tech support because the PC is out of warranty but from what I have read in the various posts, Dell tech support is pretty much useless anyway. It seems like this is a pretty common problem and that Dell is trying to keep it covered up the best they can. I'll keep on keeping on and see what happens next."
