browser trouble

Have Dim 4300,WindowsXP ,Earthlink and internet explorer for browser. Browser will  not open web page and Earthlink worked with me to do what they could but said it is a Dell issue. Said they can't change a setting that Dell has to do it. Who do I contact to fix my browser. It will not open any webpages   on my user sign in and will only open them through favorites on my husbands. As you can guess we don't know much about the operations of our computer.

Let's use common sense.  You've had the PC for at least 5 months.  I take it that IE WAS functional before you installed Earthlink?  Assuming that you had a competent Earthlink tech to reset IE to default configuration, remove cookies/temp internet files/history, turn-off hardware/software firewall, and repair IE, the problem is most likely

1).virus infection...update virus definition and run the full virus scan

2).spyware...download, update, and run Ad aware and/or Spybot from the internet.

3).conflict with Earthlink software.  Remove the Earthlink software and tell Earthlink that you want them to set you up with a Dial Up Networking account.

THERE IS NO DELL ISSUE.  That tech is an idiot.  WXP will support multiple users.  You should be able to reload any software if you're logged in as an Administrator.

Thanks. I have been working on it and cannot do the virus scan because: The application or DLL is not a valid windows image. When I am closing down windows I get an error message that says the DLL has failed. Where do I go on the computer to fix this.

There are many DLLs in Windows.  Since you cannot access the internet, see if you can go to the add/remove list and repair IE.  Also reload WXP.  Last option is to wipe the hard drive and reload Windows.

Perhaps system restore may fix the problem.  Go back as far as possible.

prlodge,

Did you just start using Earthlink as your ISP? If so, were you able to access Web sites normally before changing?

You mention not being able to open Web pages in your account. Can you log on to the Internet at all when signed in using your account? Is your account an administrator or limited account?

Hve had the same os and ISP since I dot the Dell. Have been able to scan for viruses and none were detected. Tried to use the Dell Reinstallation CD for windows XP that came with the coputer but the only Authenticity code I have is for the works suite 2001 that came with it. Get a wrong code message when I use this. Only code on reinstallation cd is a bar code. Would like to reload windows. Any idea how to do this or find out what the code that came with the software is from Dell.

prlodge,

The Product ID for Windows XP is on a sticker on the side of your computer case, but from your description of the problem I seriously doubt that reinstalling Windows will have any effect on the problem.

When you are logged on in your account go to Start|Control Panel|Network Connections. Is your connection shown there?

You were right. Reinstalling windows did not help and may have made it worse. When I go to network connections my connection shows.
