Buzzing sound through speakers

I have a Dimension 2400, when the speakers are switched on they both emit a low pitch buzzing sound. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this?

At first guess, sounds like a noisy power supply. What speakers? Do they they draw power from a wall transformer? Is a cheap, no-name brand?

Next, look for something electical near the speaker wires.

Speakers are Dell, came with the computer. They draw power from a wall socket (240 volt). The wires do hang down the back about 6 inches away from the lcd screen, but when tidied away I still get the buzzing sound. I don't know if it means anything but the buzzing does get louder if the volume on the speaker is increased.

I'd try to borrow some other speakers, with their own power adapter, to rule out problem with the PC or sound card. Noisy power supply seems the most likely culprit.
