Can not quickly delete temporary internet files

I currently have 30,000 temp files under c/windows/temporary internet files/content IE 5. The reason that I have so many is because I can not delete more than 9 at a time without the computer locking up. I have tried deleting the folders themselves under the content.IE5 folder and it locks up. I also tried right mouse clicking on the c drive and clicking on disk cleanup (I think is the other way) and it locks up. I have a friend who is trying to figure out how to do it by the MS Dos prompt. How can I delete all these temp files without it locking up?

i would try doing a repair of ie. go to add/remove and select remove. then you will have the option to repair ie (supposedly). then go to tools/internet options and select empty temp files. also there should be a tool to free up disk space in system tools in your list of programs from the start button. you could try using that to empty the temp files. if that wont work, you could try cleanall.bat from fred langa. http://www.langa.com/cleanup_bat.htm

Have you tried to just go to Internet Explorer | Tools | Internet Options and on the "General" tab selecting, "Delete Files"? This *should* work but if not and you are running W/98 or 98SE and wish to use the DOS commands you can do so as follows.

Boot to a DOS (normally, tapping the F8 key while booting will bring you to the options screen), Command Prompt only. At the C:\> prompt, type:

deltree c:\windows\tempor~1 and press, "Enter".

At the "are you sure?" prompt, type " Y" (no quotes) and press enter.

When finished, you will be returned to a C:\> prompt. Type, " win" and press "Enter" again to reboot to Windows.

Also Tools/Internet options/Advanced/Sceurity/ check @ Empty Temp Int. Files when browser closed.
Won't delete cookie temps but should jpegs, gifs, etc.when I.E. open and closed the next time used.
