You need an AGP card.  You would also need a new PSU probably.  The 6800 Ultra 512mb card is a complete waste of money.  It is no better than the 256mb version and almost costs twice as much.

are you sure those G Cards which am looking forward too are not compatible with my system?

Nearly every NVIDIA or ATI card is compatible with the Dell 8300 (in AGP form).

The new standard for graphics cards is the PCI-Express interface, but the Dell Dim8300 uses the AGP interface. You will need to buy an AGP card. Right now there is only one card (the NVIDIA 7800 series) that is not available in AGP format. The PCI-Express is just now eclipsing the AGP standards abilities, but cards like the 6800 series and X850 series are more than capable for anything (gamewise) for the next couple years. If you really want to switch to the PCI-Express format, you'll need a new computer (at least a new motherboard and probably a new cpu)

Physically, it should fit - the problem is the power supply. You can try it and see how it runs, but that card is very power-hungry. You could replace your power supply with one from www.pcpowerandcooling.com (Dell psu's are proprietary, so you can't just grab one from Best Buy and hope it works). The 6800GT is nearly as capable, less of a power-monger, and less expensive, too. It should work in your system without any trouble.

 

also if i buy that CARD and i call dell just to tell them that i have G Card and can you please install this card in my computer, will dell do that? and how much will it cost?

I doubt that they would do that, but the good news is that there are plenty of instructions people can supply here, or thru Dell's online resources -  like this : http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8300/sm/cards.htm?c=us&l=en&cs=19&s=dhs#1106134 . Installing the card is a lot easier than you think, and if you have any questions, there are plenty of posts (use the search function with '8300' 'video card replacement' to find additional help.

 

what is PSU?

PSU is the Power Supply Unit - the device that converts 110VAC from your home to the DC currents for powering different components within your computer. The one in your pc is rated by Dell at 250W - nominal, which is roughly 350W - max. It is powerful enough to handle any AGP card with the possible exceptions of the 6800Ultra and the X850XT.

The replacement unit from pcpowerandcooling shown here: http://www.pcpowercooling.com/products/viewproduct.php?show=T425D is rated at 425W and could power either of those high-end video cards. It costs ~ $135

but sir in that documentation it gives instruction on installing PCI Cards. what does that mean?

and also if i buy that fx 6800 ultra 256 mb AGP type will i probably need to change PSU aswell?

Sorry I'm so dense. I too have an 2004 8300 TExas Instruments compliant IEEE 1384 bus. I have a DVD burner and want to capture video but I never received any documentation on how to do this. I'm not sure where to plug in the VCR, and what sort of plug I need.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PCI cards are for less intesive peripherals like soundcards, modems or USB/Firewire hubs (graphics demand more attention and the AGP interface provides more bandwidth and speed than the PCI slots can).

There is no certain answer. You probably will need a more powerful psu, and I would recommend it. If the card is too powerful for your current configuration it might not boot, or worse - it cause other components to fail including your CPU or motherboard. That's just too risky for me to try and find out the hard way.

yeah your right but i wont install the graphic card i will ask  DELL to install it and i will pay them cuz if i install the GC and if something goes very bad with pc i will be responsible for that but if DELL installs it and something goes wrong, DELL have to fix that problem.

am i correct?

Dell will not install the video card for you.  They are not in the upgrade business.

You can take it to a place like Best Buy that will do it for about 40.00, but quite a few of their so called Geek Squad, are clueless.

The 6800Ultra can play anygame out there, but i am not sure if it will fit in your PC, i know you cna get a new PSU from pcpowerandcooling.com
