Cannot boot into Dell utility partition; error bootmgr missing
I am unable to boot into the Dell Utility partition to run
diagnostics on a Studio XPS 9100. The F12 function does take one to the
options, but when one selects “boot to the utility partition” an error message
appears noting “bootmgr missing, press Alt/Control/Delete to reboot the
computer.” This was working fine a week ago, but for some reason I now get this
message. There is no problem booting the computer into Windows 7. The utility (OEM) partition exists along with the Recovery partition. The only “active”
partition on the C: drive is the OS (C) partition that contains the operating
system.
If someone at Dell or elsewhere can help with this, it would
be appreciated. I realize you can run the same diagnostics from a CD or flash
drive.
Also, the Dell utility that updates the diagnostics on the
hard drive gives an error message that “no utility partition can be found or
there was a problem accessing the partition.”

I consider this issue resolved… I took the advice of technicians that I know. Their suggestion: do a “clean install” with a “real” Windows 7 Pro DVD and get rid of the Dell utility and recovery partitions.

Hi jg2711,
Seems strange but it seems your boot manager has become corrupted. I know of no way to repair it, so the best approach might be to set up a bootable flash drive with the diagnostics.

Good plan. Their usefulness is limited once you've got a clean installation and create your own backup image.
