cannot get into BIOS

Trying to add a second hd to my Dimension C521, I powered it off, removed the power and SATA connector from the DVD drive, and connected the new HD. I'm unable to get into the BIOS by pressing F2 during the startup. Actually, no key responds (ESC, F2, F12) and Vista just comes up.
I moved the USB keyboard connected to the first available USB slot on the back, but still no success. any ideas welcome.
 
Model: Dimension C512
AMD, Athelon X2
2G RAM
2 onboard SATA controllers (one for HD, one for DVD)

     Use a POWERED USB HUB to connect your keyboard. then you can access your bios settings. BIOS seems to have shutdown power to your usb ports.  Data still flows, but your keyboard needs the +5vdc to power up. I got my USB hub at biglots , about $10. But it has to be a POWERED hub, it's own power supply plugged in.
     I just posted about my similar prob, i thought it was gonna b an expensive repair, but no.

    Hmm... I would have recommended plugging a PS/2 keyboard in... but your computer only has USB inputs.

    I may have been lucky that I saw these msgs a bit late.
     
    I was successful in hitting F2 and getting into the BIOS after disconnecting all other USB devices (mouse, monitor, ...) and leaving only the kbd connected. It just worked...
     
    I think that by itself is an important item to remember.
    it may be related to external power, or to BIOS rev, but it's a simpler way, if it works for others with a similar problem.
