Cannot locate driver for "multimedia audio controller"

After reinstalling Windows on my Dimension 8400, cannot locate the driver for "multimedia audio controller" on either the Dell Resource CD or the driver download website.  Help please?

Original System Configuration Sound Card:
P1554CARD (CIRCUIT), MULTI-MEDIA, AUDIO, 1394, SB0353

Thank you!

Hi Kristin,

I have had the exact same problem. The tech support chat directed me to two driver downloads --

1) Analog Devices ADI 198x Integrated audio (file name: R94481)

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&releaseid=R94481&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P4_8400&category=0&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=2430&devlib=3&fileid=122481

2) Creative Labs SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS (file name: R92022)

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&releaseid=R92022&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P4_8400&category=0&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=8048&devlib=3&fileid=119882

Problem is -- neither of these works!! The installs tells me that "components cannot be found".

Now tech support is telling me to reinstall Windows, that something must be damaged in the OS install. I'm not sure that makes sense.

Have you tried these driver downloads? Did either one work?

Lance,

I'm working from a fresh copy of Windows XP on a brand new hard drive (my old drive crashed)....and neither of the drivers you mentioned worked for me.  :smileysad:  I'm getting ready to open up my computer - hopefully, I'll find more information about my sound card so I can try sources outside of Dell for drivers.  If I find anything I'll let you know.  In the meantime, if you solve the mystery, please post!

Thanks!

Kristin,

Someone on this board said that going to Creative.com and running the auto-updater would work -- it doesn't for me. Another person with this same problem -- jeremy.estrada@sbcglobal.net -- said that he had this problem, got a disk that fixes it, and is willing to send a copy to anyone who requests it, so I sent him an email. Let me know what you find out inside the machine, this is sooooo messed up!!

Thanks much,

-Lance

The problem with this download:

is that it's a *patch*. It's expecting some audio drivers to already be installed (and thus the message "components missing").

I'm having the same problem on my Dimension XPS. What we all need are the *original* SB audio program/drivers. In my case, I had to reinstall WinXP but do not have the original Audigy CD that came with the computer and Dell Downloads for my computer only has an audio patch file, no original Audigy program (probably a license issue with Creative for Dell to just post it on the Internet).

A call to Dell emphasizing that a patch download won't work and asking if the full-blown original program is available may help.

These worked for me:

Look under: " CREATIVE AUDIGY 2 drivers officiel"

The link should look something like: http://www.station-drivers.com/telechargement/creative/audigy2 5.12.05.522 whql.exe

(Yes, it's in french but they are multi-language and seem to have worked).

Note: I installed these and my basic sound now works (Device Mgr cleared up too). I'm no audiophile, just wanted basis sound so don't know if any issues with other sound ports (and I don't much care as long as I have basic sound.)

Your advice is much appreciated. I am downloading the file now and will try it this afternoon. Unless it plays all my music in french (!!) I'll be very pleased if this works. We'll see... Thanks! -Lance

So, after opening my computer....found out that my sound card is a Creative Tech Sound Blaster Audigy 2 card.  Tried the drivers on the Creative website - still to no avail.  Getting desperate here!  :smileysurprised:  Still trying...

Score!  Found the driver!  I've got sound!  :smileyvery-happy:

Finally all that web searching paid off.  Here's the link to the forum I found the answer in:

http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/37573/

And here's the link to the ever ellusive driver:

http://us.creative.com//support/downloads/download2.asp?Product_ID=4915&dlcentric=8060&Product_Name=Sound+Blaster+Audigy+2+ZS&OSName=Windows+XP

Best of luck!

Kristin,

Could you paste the magic driver link again -- the one in your note brings up "Page not found"....

Thanks much!
