Cannot use 19" LCD at native resolution......

I have a Dimension 4500, P4 2 GHx, 512 RAM, XP, GeForce4 MX graphics card

I bought a Viewsonic 19" LCD monitor with a native resolution of 1440x900 and have found that my graphics card doesn't go up to that resolution.  I'm using 1280x1064 which is the highest I can go. The text at this resolution is very hard to read.

I suspect I may need to upgrade my graphics card but if so, I don't know what to buy.  I'm not a gamer and basically use the computer for web surfing, email etc.  What agp card would work for me. Would like to stay with GeForce if possible.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
B. Kahne

bkahne,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

The higher the resolution you set the system to the harder it is to read. Fonts will be smaller. I am not sure if that is what you mean when you say its hard to read.

Jesse, thanks for the reply.

I realize that the higher the resolution, the smaller the text.  This is not my problem. I am not able to set my display resolution to the required native resolution for the monitor, 1440x900.  This is a common resolution for 19" LCD monitors but is not available in my Display Properties options. I am forced to use a lower resolution option.

Consequently, the monitor does not display text clearly, but rather in a very fuzzy, uneven and distorted way.

My video card is a NVidia GeForce4 MX420 with TV Out.

Do I need a new video card to be able to use my new monitor at 1440x900 resolution?  Is there any other way to set my current video card to display at this resolution?  If not, could you please suggest a video card that will allow my monitor it's native resolution?

If I'm not explaining myself clearly please ask the necessary questions and I will answer.

Thanks again and eagerly awaiting your reply!

bkahne,

These are the specs I find for this card. Have you tried removing the drivers and reinstall them back to see if that will resolve the issue? It should be working at that resolution. Also, have you turned clear type font on in WinXP?

Hi Jesse,

I did try clear type fonts and that didn't help.  I will try reinstalling the video card driver and I will also look for any driver updates.  Later....
