Can't boot from CD-ROM..

I have an XPS (purchased in 2003) and am trying to test booting in recovery environment with Norton Ghost 9.0 using the Norton CD while attempting to boot with the CD drive.

My drive is an NEC combo CD/DVD drive that was installed by Dell.

I am able to F12 at the DELL logo (after several attempts) and then select boot from IDE CD-ROM (#5 on the list) but the computer then continues to load the Windows XP Pro log-on screen.

I am not able to access the Norton recovery environment main window with the CD.

I am doing this as a test. It is reccommended that I do so before using the new software I have installed to make sure that I will be able do boot from it should I ever need to restore the backup image created with Norton Ghost.

I have a DVD-ROM. I can try that.

Didn't think I'd get a reply this quick and am about to have to get to church but will try that as soon as I get back. Thanks.

Do you have more than one CD/DVD device on your computer?  If so, try booting from the other one.

Well, that did it. Had trouble with the monitor, but just switched it off and back on and the 'video mode not supported' error went away. Was able to enter the recovery environment of Norton Ghost from the CD. All is good I hope.

thanks for the tip
