Can't install dell drivers?
I just reinstalled windows XP. Downloaded the drivers I needed for my desktop. Burned them as a data CD. When I try to open them on my computer it says windows can not open this file. I even tried a data DVD. Am I doing something wrong? I have never had this problem before. Maybe need to be using a better program to burn? I'm using Express burn right now.

Welcome to the forums :emotion-21:
I've not long replied to another forum member with exactly the same problem.
I suspect the reason the system "can't open this file", is because it's a compressed file, and you don't have a suitable program installed?
If I'm right... my reply to them, applies equally to you :emotion-5:

I'm not sure what my sister is doing wrong :emotion-7: I am at my wits end. I got her to download 7zip. She got it to install on her dell. When she puts the disk in with the drivers it is still not wanting to open them. So first she browsed for 7zip. She said there were 4 files so she tried all. One said it was a bad command and another one said can not open file D:/DellDriverDownloadmanager.application as archive. So then she right clicked one of the driver files. She tried extract here and it says can not open file as a archive. She tried extract files and said some weird box opened up with mode overwrite and mode password. Any clues as to what she is doing wrong? If I was in the same state as her I could probably help her out alot more but I just have no clue what went wrong.

Clear the browser cache and cookies, and then try to download the drivers again. If you get a prompt about using the Download Manager or your Browser, choose Browser. They should download as .exe files which don't need to be extracted. Just double-click on them on the desktop to run.
Is it possible there was a problem with your Windows reinstall so that it's not recognizing the .exe file type? If that's the case, go here and copy/paste the entire text, including blank lines, into NotePad. Save the file as "exe.reg". Be sure to include the quote marks around the name, so NotePad doesn't add .txt to it. Copy this file over to the desktop of the system where you're trying to install the drivers. Then with all other windows and apps closed, double-click on exe.reg. Accept the offer to modify the registry and reboot when it's done. Try installing the drivers again.

We really need to know what kind of file/format the files on the CD are, before we can offer suggestions how to use them?
I just assumed they'd be compressed files, since the majority of driver downloads off the Dell website, are compressed files - which require extracting before you can use them?
What specific model desktop is it? You said you downloaded the drivers, but you didn't say where from, specifically?
Did you get the drivers directly off the 'Drivers & Downloads' page for the system, on the Dell website?
Assuming that is where you got them, they'll almost certainly be compressed?
