Can't shut down the computer!

Ok, I know how to shut down the computer. I'm an experienced user. It's just that the computer just won't shut itself down. It just sort of hangs while Windows is shutting down. It gets as far as:
- Shutting down... Please wait...
And nothing happens. I have to hold the power button for about 10 seconds before it turns off. And when I start the computer again scandisc starts and tells me that the computer wasn't shut down properly. I'm running Windows 98 on a XPS b600r.
Any ideas how to solve this annoying problem?

I am having the same trouble shutting down the computer. I finally hit "Esc" and it shut down. What is causing the problem. Ken

I too am having a similar problem, only my power button doesn't seem to work either... Maybe I am not patient enough (wait 10 seconds), I end up pulling the power cord (OUCH!!!)

Hey join the club, i am also an experienced user and have recently purchased a dimension 4100 PIII 866Mhz, with Win ME installed. Almost every time when i try to shut down the system the computer hangs, which leaves me having to use the reset button to get the system to reboot. On successfully entering windows i can then shut down fine. I have had my new system for about a month now, and this problem has just started in the last two weeks.

Someone please help i have tried everything!!!

Most shutdown or power off issues are caused by software problems on the system. The first thing that you will generally want to try is to use MSCONFIG to disable all startup programs except Systray and Explorer and see if you have the same problems. If you do not, start re-enabling one startup item at a time, restart and test again. Repeat this until the problem returns and the last item that you reinstated may be the problem. If you get the same problem with the startup cleared, check to see if there is any program that you are using that may be causing shutdown problems.

If you are using Windows ME and AOL and are having shutdown problems, you may want to contact AOL for possible fixes to the conflicts between AOL’s software and Windows ME.

I have had this problem with a new dimension 4100 866 with windows me for a couple of weeks. It it a very complex matter. They may first say that it is caused by AOL or Norton Antivirus, but mine was not.
My problem is a driver devldr16.exe related to the soundblaster sound card installed by Dell, that continued to run preventing a clean shutdown. I learned that you can't disenable it because it keeps reloading, and windows won't let you remove this driver, and a download from creative did not correct it. After much work, the conclusion is that no one knows how to fix it. From the posts here, a lot of people are having similar
problems. Call dell tech support and push for a resolution. I have spent a couple difficult weeks on mine, contacting dell, aol, norton, and microsoft.
