CHKDSK
I have a dimension 8300 with Windows XP. My PC was running a bit slow, I used the program Fix-it-utilities to check it and one of the messages I got was "Disk Fixer found problems with the file system. Run CHKDSK with the /F (fix) option to correct these".
I set my PC to run CHKDSK, and restarted my PC, but then got the message "Cannot open volume for direct access".
I have run CHKDSK in the past without any such problem, can anyone help.

This is a known problem for which there is currently no fix. You can get around it by running chkdsk /x which forces a dismount (and implies the /f switch).

Start|Run, enter chkdsk /x (space before the "/") and click OK.
