Click & Freeze

The click is coming from inside the computer, not generated by any sort of speaker. It's a loud, very distinctive CLICK. Almost so distinctive, you'd think it was supposed to do it.

Not a bad idea, back up my stuff, but i really doubt it's the hard drive about to take a dump. This noise has ALWAYS been there, since the first day i got the computer. It happened so infrequently i didn't think much about it (plus our IS team at work kinda stinks at troubleshooting pc's).

Like i said, it's very distinctive -- almost as if it's intentional. It never varies or sounds worse. Always exactly the same.

What kind of click are you talking about?

A click from the hard drive, or a click out of the speakers?

I really hate to say this, but it really sounds like your hard drive is about to come to the end of its life. I would suggest backing up any important data before it crashes. I would just let it run till it breaks, but make sure all your important is backed up, it could happen any minute.

I have had 2 hard drives do that to me, and have a family member who's computer is doing the same yours it and it is the hard drive, and when it does it, It will lock up, but you say it recovers, so, I really don't know what it is.

Yes, This happened to me on my old Dell XPS Windows 98 system last spring... at least I suspect it's the same thing. I had my Explorer hang on me as I was deleting a large directory. I rebooted and got a system with a click as you described, which I have to think was the hard drive r/w head constantly repositioning due to some damage to the File Allocation Table or some such system table on the hard drive. My Dell would work, but would hesitate with the clicking drive. I tried all the scandisk/defrag Windows98 applications to no avail. I reformatted the drive, reinstalled Windows 98, restored my applications, and everything was fine.

I suspect you'll have to do the same thing. At least don't give up on your drive until you reformat it and restore.

Glad you said that, she might have gotten another drive. Never heard of something like that before. Mine were clicks, then a dead hard drive.
