Right-click on My Computer, select Properties and go to the Device Manager tab in the System Properties window that appears. You should see Network Adapters listed, with a plus sign to the left, if there's an ethernet card installed. Click on the plus sign there, and it will give you the specifics.
If you don't have one installed, they're easy to find, and the prices are quite reasonable right now. You can get a good card for a laptop for $25-30, and I just found one for a desktop unit at Best Buy for $20 last week. Linksys and 3 Com are both good, reliable brands. Installation is as simple as plugging the card into an open slot, and inserting a floppy disk to load the drivers.
an ethernet card is a network card that is also used for cable and dsl internet access. while a modem is 56k, an ethernet card is 10/100 mbps.the cord that plugs into it is just like a phone line but with 8 pins/wires as opposed to 4. so if u see a phone jack thats twice as big/wide as a regular one u know u have one. an ethernet card for a computer and laptop costs about $20 and $50, respectively. without it u cant use dsl or cable!
