computer churning away???

Hello,

 

There could be several reasons for this.

 

1. You may have picked up a Trojan, Virus, or Malware. Scan your system manually with any Anti-virus and Malware detectors you may have. If you dont have any or they are expired, I can help you get some good free ones.

2. You may be short of memory for the number of startup items you have on boot. In other words, the memory required exceeds the installed RAM and the extra memory needed for the aplication is swapped to the hard drive.

3. You may be running out of hard drive space. Double click your "My Computer" icon and right click the C: drive icon, look in "properties" and look at the disk useage.

4. Your hard drive may be terribly fragmented. In that case go to the start menu, programs, accessories, system tools, and click the "Disk Defragmenter", run it.

 

OR, it could be a combination of any of the above.

 

You can right click the task bar and pull up the task manager, look in "processes" tab to see which applications are using the most CPU power. The "performance" tab will show you the memory being used. If the green lines/graph are very high you memory useage is saturated.

Hello,

My bet is that this is caused by something you installed.

When this happens, right click on the taskbar and choose "Task manager". (At least in XP).

Go to the "processes" tab and look at the CPU usage. Tell us what you find.

Take the other steps them, degragmentng the drive, scan for Virus/Malaware.

 

Also, tell us what is listed in your startup items: Click Start Menu, click "Run" type in msconfig hit OK. Look in the startup tab, see what is listed and report it here.

How much memory do you have?

If this is when the drive is "Churning" lets ask again what the other suggested.

What size hard drive do you have?

How much free space is on the drive?

How much memory is installed in the system?

What version of Windows do you run?

Are you sure it's dpdproxy, and not dpcproxy?

Can't say what's happening from evidence presented.  8-25% processor usage is nominal.  You mean the drive churns?  Firefox will do that on certain sites, usually involving Flash ad content, seldom more than a minute or two though.  And during this time, it will be very sluggish to respond to user input.  Does that happen?

He said on first boot/startup it does this. I get no drive churning with Firefox. ???

Good points. AVG Anti-Virus used to do that, I don't know if the new versions do or not. Indexing can be turned off by right clicking the C: drive icon in the My Computer on your desktop, select properties, uncheck the box in front of "Allow Indexing Service....." then when errors come up, click "ignore all" and let it finish. This will disable that pesky Indexing Service.

Two things commonly cause drive churning.  One is antivirus set to scan 'everything' on startup.  Another is Windows Fast Find Indexing, which is all but useless and should be turned off.

Thanks..im trying to do all these things....cant find allow index service?

upon boot the pc will churn away for 10 mins? and be very sluggish...then it will tic away, for ever, sprodically, even if no programs open?
