Computer running slow

I just bought a Demension 4500, with 256 RAM and Windows XP about 4 months ago, for as long as I can remember, it has been running slow.  Word takes 2 minutes to open, and even pauses when I try and type something.  When I open up Internet Explorer, it takes a good 45 sec. to a minute to open up the window..but my internet works fine.   My printer takes 10 minutes to print a Word document.  It seems that when I open up a program, it just pauses for a while before its starts to work.  I was thinking all this time that I needed to upgrade my RAM, because thats what everybody says when you have a slow running computer, but a friend of mind just bought a Deminsion 4500 with 128 RAM, and it runs 20 times faster, all programs open quickly, and there are no delays on any of the programs.  Could someone please help out with this?

I did take a look what Volcano11 has written and did all the necessary steps, Disk defrag, scandisk..etc.

The problem with the slowness doesn't lie within the startup of my computer, it lies within opening applications, Word, Excel, etc.  Everytime I try to open a program it sits for about two-five minutes before the computer starts up. When I try and pring it sits for 10 minutes before it starts to even think about printing. It is very frustrating to buy a computer and to not have it work properly when you open the box.  I have had this computer for 5 months and it has had this problem since the first start up.   I have tried to figure this out, but I am giving up.  Is it possible that Dell has sent a fality computer?  Or is there an alternative in finding the problem with this?

Hi!

I recently had the same problem and know it can be very frustrating. I would recommend you try to do a clan install. That is format the hard disk, and install everything anew. This should solve the problem if not we can start doing diagnostics on the different hardware. Through elimination I believe your problem can be solved.

I would sincerly like to help you. Do not giveup or be dishearted. If there is a problem with any hardware Dell will replace it as your computer is only 5 months old.

Let me know of your progress. If you want to ask anything, ask.
