CPU performance waaaayyy too slow.......

Question

Hi! I've got a 4 month old Dimension 3000, which of course, is supposed to have a CPU speed of around 3.0 Ghz. But it's been running very slowly, and my Road Runner Medic diagnoses that my system is only running at 297 Mhz. What can I do about this?

I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions that come my way...

is it really 297mhz or is it 2970? has it been like this since you got it?

is it slow when you first got the system??? usually when you connect to a broadband service even if it's first time,there's a chance that you might get spywares.

go into your Bios and check your cpu to see if it is set on normal not compatible

is it a P4 or a Celeron and to be sure download Cpu-Z from www.cpuid.com, I am surprised that XP would boot at 300MHz

OK, to answer above questions -

It did not run this slowly at first, but then did. I then dumped my McAfee AV software and installed a different program. Then it ran fine again. But for the last couple weeks, it has slowed way down again.

My memory is 256 MB DDR SD-RAM. I know I should have more, and plan to at least double it, but like I said, the system ran fine a while ago so I don't think memory is my only problem.

I've got a Pentium 4 processor. I also have Ad-Aware Spyware software and have run it. I have also cleaned up my history and uninstalled several unused programs. I have defragmented the hard drive.

Thanks for the tip on downloading CPU-Z. It's very cool. I guess the speed must actually have been 2970 Mhz before - Road Runner Medic must drop the last digit. So if the processor is running at full speed, then why does it take so long to move between windows or open new programs?
