CPU stuck 100% at startup.

Question

Been having this problem for a few days now....and I thought that I had this fixed until a few minutes ago when i got "knocked" off the web.(possibly a modem prob?) Anyways, I tried to connect and I get an error message(moden not found). I reboot. When I reboot, my cpu is stuck on 100% for about 4 minutes, then all is normal. ok, so I connect to the web and after about 30 minutes I get knocked offline again....there goes my cpu usage. Also, both times I get booted offline, when I try and reconnect I get a moden not found error. So Im rebooting by now and am able to get online(still getting the 100% CPU usage). I have always had this problem wih the modem several times before but never had the cpu usage being stuck on 100%.

Anyhow, Earlier tonight I found out that my printer(OfficeJetK60) was a big resource eater. So, I went to control panel and deleted my printer, turned pc off, unplugged printer, and plugged back in. After rebooting, my cpu usage is very low. I reinstall all the drivers, everythign is good-low cpu usage! Everythign was working smooth for about 2 hours until I started having these modem problems. Who knows? This has really threw me for a loop I tell ya! Is it the modem, printer or just a bad processor...or a combination? Is anyone esle having the same problems? Possibly a pattern here? Hi Memphis Jen,
After reading your post and Mess. I went and checked my CPU usage it was at 100%!! I checked my processes Dellmmkb.exe was at 94 I uninstalled my Dell Touch keyboard from Add/Remove. CPU went down to 0 to 2%. Do you have Dellmmkb.exe listed in your processes? The draw back is my Dell Touch does not work, but I never used it anyway. I tried to install the new drivers from this link

But it didn't work, I will look into that later. Let me know if this works for you.

I had a similar problem yesterday. I found that it was the "Indexing Service" or CISVC.exe. I went into services and disabled it. It solved my problem.

I used most (not all) of this guys recommendations and I think it is one reason my pc runs so well.

I noticed one of them was, disable Indexing Service.

I didn't even know mine was running at 100% until I read Jen's post and checked mine. But to tell you the truth I really don't notice a big difference in my system now that it is down to 2%. I wonder how exact our built in performance program really is? I have another testing program called SiSoft Sandra Professional and I never got any 100% CPU usage from their tests. I wonder how you can find out. It seems to bother a lot of posters, it did me

Hi Marvin:

From what some posters say it is not too accurate. And sounds like it's not on yours.

But I can tell on mine when there is a problem. My computer will slow to a crawl, I check task manager and it shows 100% CPU. I have a problem with Netscape mail notification hanging about once a week. I just shut it down in the task mgr. and everything goes back to normal. So it looks like the CPU usage is pretty close in mine.

Hi,
I had the *exact* same thing on startup. How annoying! Like you I traced it
down to "DellMMkb" in the task mgr ...my cpu was pinned at 98/99% for a good 3+ minutes then, of its own accord, it would "settle down". This all started happening when I programmed the 'Home' black button to execute "My Computer" so that I could have EZ access to the drives/cd/folders, etc.
My fix? I uninstalled the keyboard/driver, shut it down cold and rebooted. Yes the keyboard was still recognized on startup/bootup ...but XP still noticed the "discrepancy" ("Found new hardware") and "self-fixed".
Now, when I boot up the "DellMMkb" is still on the task list but it's at 0 and my
cpu is (at System Idle) maybe 5% or less. I like the buttons on the keyboard, and would like to program that Home button again, but if the same thing happens then I'll just do without.
