CPU Upgrade Dimension 9100
Hi i'm thinking of buying a new processor for my Dimension 9100 but i'm not sure if my system will take a quad core or core 2 duo. I have a P4 640 3.2GHZ with the Intel 945P chipset and Dell 0x8582 motherboard will a new CPU work with this?
Regards
Brian

You can install Intel dual-core Pentium D and no, the D-9100 does not support any Intel Core 2 Duo, or Core 2 Quad processors.

Hi Bsal
Sorry to refer to this very old thread. I am also looking to upgrade the CPU in my Dimension 9100. You say it will support Intel dual-core Pentium D. What is the highest performance dual core Pentium D processor that the system will support? I ahve currently Pentium 4 running at 3.04 GHz.
Also how much performance improvement such an upgrade will give? Will the same heat sink and fan work?
Thanks and look forward to reply from you or anyone who has done this...

A Smithfield will not provide much of a boost at all. The 820, 830, 840 all work.
The Pentium D was a gimmick.
It does not work anywhere near the way a Core2 Duo does in terms of memory speed and performance.
Smithfield P4, 840, 3.2G, 800FSB, 2MB, Socket-T
Dell Part Number W9446 compatible with the following Dell Models
Dimension 5100C, Dimension 9100, Dimension XPS 600, OptiPlex GX620, PowerEdge 830, PowerEdge 850, PowerEdge SC430, Precision WorkStation 380, Precision WS380

Either the Pentium D 950, or the D 945 should work in the dimension 9100, but the performance upgrade you will see, may not be worth the cost of the upgrade.
Prior to upgrading the processor, you need to upgrade the BIOS to to the latest version, A03, when support for newer processors was added, everything else should be fine.

I too have a Dimension 9100 - works great but a bit more speed and life out of the old tank would be nice.
If I read this right - an Intel e5800 CPU should be compatible - it's a dual-core and LGA-775:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Pentium_Dual-Core_microprocessors
It's confusing though with Intel's use of "dual-core" - see below:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentium_Dual-Core
Wikipedia has a thread on the exact CPU (Prescott) in my system - I suspect the same with many of the D-9100's out there
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Prescott#Prescott
So the million dollar question is, would a roughly $75 investment in an e5800 work? or make any difference in performance?
BTW - my Windows7 CPU shows 3.9 as the experience index which is the lowest # - everything else is a 5.x - not bad for a 2004 computer - IMHO

The Intel e5800 processor is not compatible with the Dimension 9100, the Pentium D and Pentium 4 processors are compatible.
