Defragmenter

After ten hours, the defragmenter box keeps going from 0% complete to 1, 2 and then 3% complete, then back to zero. I'm 62. Will the process end during my expected lifetime? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Did you shut down everything but Systray and Explorer prior to running Defrag? If not, there are a lot of things that can reset the program and cause this. Make sure A/V prog. is off, too. If you're on a cable connection and running a firewall, you may have to disconnect/shut the firewall down as well.

Boot up into "Safe Mode" (hit f8 a couple of times) . Then run defrag after closing all programs except explorer and systray.

Goonboy: Thanks. All I had running was my internet connection. After thirteen hours with no progress, I shut the defragmenter down and am back at sq. one.

That's a nice, clear set of instructions for that process - with your permission, I'd like to save them and offer them to future inquirers (with the appropriate credit noted, of course).

Thanks!

Hi,
In addition to all the fine advice; you should run ScanDisk prior to running the Defrag Utility. It might be that you will need to run from SafeMode but you could try the steps listed below to see if it works. Another thing that I would recommend is to run your updated AntiVirus program and if you don't have one then go to Trendmicro and run Housecall.
Steve

Steps for running ScanDisk & Disk Defragmenter

1. Run Disk Cleanup Tool by: Start > Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
2. Make sure that your C: drive (letter for Harddrive) is listed and click ok.
3. Put check marks in box for Temporary Internet Files, Temporary Files & Recycle Bin then click ok, are you sure > yes.
4. Right Click > exit your Anti Virus from Systray icon.
5. Do Ctrl-Alt-Delete to bring up Close Programs box.
6. Highlight line and click end task.
7. Continue to do this until all are gone except Explorer & Systray.
8. When these two are the only ones left, Click cancel to close box.
9. Clean out Windows Temp folder.
10. Double Click My Computer > DC Harddrive icon > DC Windows Folder > DC Temp Folder > Edit > Select All > File > Delete > return to desktop.
11. Turn off screensaver & set monitor turn off to never.
12. Right click on desktop > Properties > Screensaver > energy savings setting > set to never > Apply > ok > set screensaver to none > Apply > Ok
13. Run ScanDisk.
14. Start > Programs > Accessories > System tools > ScanDisk.
15. Run Disk Defragmenter.
16. Start > Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Defragmenter.
17. When finished, reset screensaver & Monitor.
18. Reboot.

Hi T.
Be my guest!
I would rather substitute in EndItAll but not everyone has it installed. Using this routine I have only run into one system that ended up needing to run in SafeMode and I still can't figure out why.
Good Day.

Thanks Steve! My only problem with the EndItAll idea would be that, based on correspondence with both Symantec and Zone Labs, I get the distinct feeling they don't like seeing it used on NAV or Zone Alarm. Fred Langa mentioned the NAV thing recently, and ZA Tech Support mentioned it to me when they saw it on a software list from Belarc I sent them while troubleshooting an issue.

Anyway, thanks for the use approval, and stand by your mailbox for those royalty checks to start rolling in. :-0

Thanks for the heads up on ZA! I did my system maintance since the time that I posted and had no problems. I always close the AV from Systray but I will start closing ZA also.
Sure could use those checks :)

Mr. Weich, with all the excellent advise you've received, also try the Microsoft knowledge base "www.microsoft.com" without the Quotes, And go to support and type in 186978. That might not answer your particular question, but it will get you into the defrag. quieries. barney31
