Dell Diagnostics suddenly not working 2 different computers

I run the full dell diagnostics located at the support forum www.dell.com/support/diagnostics monthly on two different Windows 7 Pro PCs.  Suddenly today it won't run.  One one PC it ran and appeared to be working, but at the end there was a splat with a generic "Windows IO error" and no log/display of the results.  On the other one a similar situation but the error message was slightly different.  I was able to run the quick diagnostics on one computer. The displays etc in the diagnostic tool have changed since I ran last month, so I'm guessing this is a new version and they have problems with it.  Can anyone give me any further help with this?  Thanks!

Hi scamperpamela,

Did you perform any recent hardware or software change on the system?

Try uninstalling and re-installing the software.

Restart the system after uninstalling the software.

Thanks & Regards

On both computers there have been no software changes I have made

since August 31, when I last ran the diagnostics.  The diagnostics actually

do run, but they fail to log the results. So if I am not sitting in front

of the machine,  I can't see the results. I just ran the diagnostics, a second time on

one machine, and the message is "There was an issue running diagnostics".

Same message as last time on this machine, slightly different on the other

machine with the same Win Pro 7 and same service package. A third run gave "Windows IO error". On the thrid run I watched the diagnostics step through all the hard drives but missed the ending. The error message displays on the diagnostics page after the detailed diagnostics are finished, and no report is logged.  Note that I was able to run a quick diagnostics with a report and no error.

I performed your suggestion of uninstalling, rebooting, and trying again. However, it is not totally clear if I got the diagnostics uninstalled as on one computer I didn't see anything in the control panel. Same exact result.  Since this is on two different computers, I do believe the diagnostics have a problem with logging after a complete diagnostics run.  Any additional steps I can take to get things working again would be very helpful, thanks.

No answer has been given that has helped.  Obviously it is a Dell (or PC Doctor) software problem since everything has been working fine on my 2 computers and your computer up to now. And the software has changed as I see some of the displays are different.  Hope Dell will get this fixed, I rely on it to keep my computers in good shape!

I just ran the diagnostics for the first time and had the same thing happen, "Generic Windows IO error". Did a Google search of the message and found this. Will be interested to hear a solution.

Hi debtless,

Please share the system model and the operating system installed. Also elaborate the issue you are facing with the system.

Keep me posted with the information. I will be glad to assist further.

Amogh, I am the original poster of this problem. Please review what I wrote above in that I had the same problem on two different computers and both under Chrome and IE.

To be helpful and in hopes that Dell will address this problem, I ran another diagnostic just now.  The results were the same. I ran it on a Vostro 460 running Win 7 Pro and used Google Chrome browser, latest flash, etc. I started the diagnostics at www.dell.com/support/Diagnostics and chose Complete. (In earlier tests, a quick diagnostic worked, but a Complete or Hardware did not).  The diagnostics appeared to run correctly, about an hour, stepping through all the diagnostics.  I was watching it at the end, did not see the last few tests (they are very rapid and may not have shown up before the end of the diagnostics). Then suddenly I get no log, and the message "There was an issue running diagnostics".

It appears to me to be a posting of the log problem. As best I can tell on the various test runs I have done, the diagnostics themselves are working, but except for the quick diagnostic they can no longer post the log.  The error message varies slightly (see my first post), but the results are the same: no long, and no record that the diagnostic ran.

I had the same problem using the online Diagnostics and kept getting no results and "Generic Windows I/O Error" (Dell XPS Studio 9000/ 435t Win7 Home Premium).   But I was able to complete a "complete" scan and get the results by downloading the Dell PC Checkup program (pcdlauncher.exe) and running it local.  Hope that helps.

Hi scamperpamela,

Please share the system models. You may run the hardware diagnostics on the system to check for the hardware functionality by following the steps below:

  • Reboot and press F12 to enter the Boot Menu
  • When the boot device list appears, highlight Diagnostics and press Enter
  • The computer begins to run the Pre-boot System Assessment, a series of embedded diagnostics that perform initial testing on your system board, keyboard, hard drive, and display
  • In case any hardware component is bad, you will get a corresponding error

For more information on ‘Dell Support Center’, you may refer to the link: http://dell.to/15R0g8s.

Hope this helps. Please feel free to reply for any further assistance.

Similar issue here. Ran the Full Diagnostic, the process went by smoothly until the last step: the generation of the report. I was returned back to the web page with "Generic Windows IO error" displayed in a yellow box.

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro on a Dell Inspiron 15R N5010 (yes, I am aware that there is no official Windows 8 support for this model, so that might be an issue). I had just performed a format and clean reinstall of Windows previously.

A half dozen people have reported this problem here with no response.  Please Dell at least state your intentions on supporting or not supporting this product....

I found the diagnostics under Dell\My Dell\PC Checker on my computer, located from the Start Button. It appears to be the same diagnostics and ran correctly. So obviously we should use that instead of the online diagnostics.  it is very puzzling that no one from Dell could tell us that - and that they keep these defective diagnostics online.
