Dell Dimension 4700 Processor Upgrade
Hi my dell dimension 4700 has the Intel Pentium 4 520 processor could the Intel Pentium 4 670 or the Intel Pentium 4 672 processors work?

Both should be compatible, see the following, listed under Compatible Products:-

Prior to installing the processor, you need to upgrade the BIOS to the latest version A10, when support for newer processors was added.

I put the 670 in my 4700. Works fine except the fan runs a lot higher speed and more noise. Only an issue running late at night when everything else is quiet. I have not tried some of the fan tricks described in other threads.
I have seen info suggesting that although the Intel chipset may support certain hardware or capabilities, Dell does not always enable or support those capabilities in the rest of the motherboard

Looks like the 670 can be had for under $20 now. Assuming it uses a standard socket 775 mount for the heatsink there are a lot of upgraded cooling solutions that can go with that as well, and in fact you probably need to upgrade as the old CPU likely did not consume as much power nor run as hot..
