Dell Dimension 9100

well iv'e decided to get a new computer since iv'e had this one for 4 years now.
this is what im thinking of getting:

Dell Dimension 9100
P4 630 3.0GHz
2048MB RAM ( 4x512 )
GeForce 6800 (to bad they don't have any of the other series such as GT or Ultra, i know there is a good radeon one but i don't like radeon even tho it's the second best card on the market)
160GB HDD (7200rpm)
17" TFT

would you consider this a good buy or a good bye?

It's not much of a help in current games, but it is a big help to everything else. For me personally having used a dual CPU system for a year, I wouldn't buy a desktop system without it now, but it's not needed per se.

thanks but no thanks. Dual core is for the future games, i'll stick with a P4.

hehe well i spend most of the time playing games so thats why im stickin with the P4. this computer and graphics card is very very outdated. i have a 1.7GHz P4 with 256MB RAM, GeForce3 Ti200 Graphics card and a 60GB HDD. tells everything doesn't it? :)

Hey, you're doing better than some of the people on here :D

Anyway, enjoy your new system. I've had no issues with my 8400, and the 9100 seems like it's better built, what with the BTX design.

Good deal. If you can justify the cost, going with a dual core system is a nice boost, as the second CPU really helps for general Windows usage.

If you want to get a card better than a 6800, buy it with the X300 (or X600 I think is standard now) and purchase a 7800GT or 7800GTX (seeing you are unwilling to buy a X850).

I suggest you get (at least) the 19" UltraSharp monitor. If money is an issue, go with 1GB ram--I doubt you'll notice any difference.

lol i have no problem with the screen. 17 is perfect. sorry mate no use of getting the x300 since i don't know how to input a new graphics card. tho i will learn by time. i know it's as easy as changing a lightbulb but lightbulbs can sometimes blew , just like it would with my computer :P tho that will of course be my first thought when i learn how to input a new graphics card! :)

Just make sure you get a fast 17" Dell LCD, or you will be experiencing ghosting with the slower units.  Look at the refresh rates on the monitor specs for the MS rating.  The lower the better.

Just so you know that the 173FP is a slow LCD with a 25ms refresh.  You will more than likely get a lot of ghosting on the screen when playing games with a lot of action.

My opinion would be to order the system without the 17" LCD from Dell, and go to one of the computer superstores in your area, and look at a Samsung 17".  You could probably find one that meets your financial needs, and be good for gaming.

i really appriciate your help everyone! since some new stuff has been brought to the 9100 by our dearest dell (:P) iv'e decided to make a little upgrade. tho iv'e already gone above the maximum price that my mom said but she agreed to it on one condition, that i have to pay all i got :P reasonable choice! :D , anyway here are the new specs:

Intel® Pentium 4 processor with HT technology 640 (3.20GHz, 800FSB, 2MB cache)
2048MB Dual Channel DDR2 533MHz (4x512) Memory
160GB (7200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive with 8MB DataBurst™ cache
Single 256MB PCI-Express nVidia™ GeForce™ 7800 graphics card
17" Flatscreen (173FP)

thats that, I cannot bring the price up any more on like more GHz on the P4 or anything else.

As a few other people have said getting the Dual Core is a smart move. When you said it's for "future games", thats like years ago when everyone said "why in the heck would I need 8MB of ram? Or no one will ever need a 1GB hard drive. If your going to buy a new computer thats my recommendation since Microsoft Windows Vista will be built for Dual cores and so on.

Let me ask you a question, what do you think is better for power & speed: (1) 3.2Ghz Pentium 4 or (2)? Really not hard to see.

Regarding the LCD's, My wife has the 19" Analog LCD & I have Ultrasharps. We both have 7800GTX video cards and to be honest the Ultrasharp is not worth the upgrade. Thats my opinion. :smileywink:

The 19" Analog has a 16ms response time. The 17" UltraSharp has 12ms. Same with the 19" I believe.
