You can buy memory, that's certified to work in your 5150/E510, from here:

http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Dimension+E510

The Dimension E510 can support up to 8gb of RAM [4 x 2gb modules], but if a 32-bit operating system is installed, this will see and utilize, only 3gb or 3.5gb. To utilize more memory, a 64-bit version of the operating system is required.

The E510 uses a standard power supply, but you'll want right-angle SATA connectors. I'm not sure about the memory, but standard PC6400 DIMMs should work. I know someone with a 5150 (non-US version of the E510), and I'd like to confirm this.

How do I go from 32 bit to 64? Im unable to get the pc on, undoubtedly cause of the memory modules. So how do I know if I have 32 or 64?

If you have a 32-bit system, a 64-bit version of the operating system would need to be purchased and install it, followed by loading the appropriate drivers and applications.

As you cannot start the computer, basically all you can do, is check the Windows reinstallation disc, that should have came with the computer, to see if it's labeled either 32-bit, or 64-bit.

You can buy Windows 8 64-bit in download form from Microsoft for $40 through the end of the month.

I'm assuming you have XP, and 64-bit XP was rare in its day.

I looked up in my manual, and it says that I can only go up to 4gb, not 8 as you suggested.  I do see however, that I only have 32 bits, not 64. What and how do I install 64? Is it difficult?

You can buy Windows 8 Professional 64-bit from the Microsoft online store for $40. XP qualifies as a base for upgrading.

Buy a 4gb flash drive and install the upgrade to said device. You can also install to a DVD if you have a burner.

It's probably because Dell's manual has not been updated, if you check Crucial's website, using the link I post, you will notice it is 8gb.

As Crucial guarantees their memory to be compatible, I would use their specifications.

As I have already posted, to upgrade to a 64-bit operating system, you would need to carry out a clean reinstallation of the 64-bit OS.

The following are Dell's Windows manual installation guides for XP, Vista and Win 7, reading them, may give you an idea what the procedures are:

Quote: 'Is it difficult?', I don't think it is, but if you have never installed an operating system, you may have some issues.

I would try a pair of these. If they work, another pair might give you 8gb (in conjunction with a 64-bit operating system). If they don't work, you can RMA them.

This power supply is better quality, very quiet and about the same price. It's what I'm using in my XPS 7100 homebuilt quad-core.

Yep, that just about it.

I used Newegg's Memory Finder and found the following compatible RAM for the Dimension e510, that might also be worth a look:

Ok. this is what I understand. this is the power supply that will work for my Dell e510 ( I hope u can click on link to see)

www.atxpowersupplies.com/460-watt-power-supply-FSP460-60GLC.php

then, to upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit, I get Windows 8 (or something newer than XP)

I then need memory modules, which this was recommended:

www.crucial.com/.../listparts.aspx

or this:

www.newegg.com/.../Product.aspx

and all should be good.. Is this about right???

You don't *need* a touch screen for Windows 8.

The E510 is compatible, although I'm unsure about the sound device.

Perhaps a whiz like Speedstep can suggest a fix for the sound driver.
