Dell Memory Upgrade Question
I just installed an additional 2GB of dell memory into my demension 4700. This brings my total memory to 4GB. However, under System Properties General it indicates that I have only 2,99GB and I think it should say 3.99 GB. I checked the BIOS and the full 4GB is recorded there. Is there a reason that the system is only indication 2.99 GB and how can I get the system to recognize a 4GB of memory I have installed?
Would appreciate any assistance I can get.
Thanks,
Dave.Rock

When you have a 32-bit system, this does not recognize 4gb of memory, 3±gb is all a 32-bit system can address.
Basically what it means is, while you can install 4gb of memory in the system, the reason it’s not recognized is mainly due to 32-bit processors and/or 32-bit applications on memory address limitations.
64-bit processors & operating systems will recognize beyond the 32-bit limitation.

That is probably correct. Depending on what hardware is using it could only be 2.99GB available. Generally it's between 3 and 3.5GB but with the particualar hardware you apparently have it's 2.99GB.

Here's why.
I have 4gb in my box and it uses the full 4gb, but it's a third-party mainboard (MSI) running Windows 7 64-bit.
You might try upgrading to a 64-bit version of Windows.
