Dell Penryn systems?

Question

Hi all, has Dell made any announcements, or does anyone know what Dell's plans to put penryns into the XPS 720 series is? Or will it be a new model, or what? Thanks for any insight!

Dell doesn't pre-announce, but you can pretty surely bet that Dell will have the CPU shortly after release.

Rumors say Intel will change the socket type, so that means new model/new boards/no upgrade for existing systems. Even if it manages to keep LGA 775, the pinouts will change and/or the voltage requirements will differ, meaning that existing systems can't be upgraded, in the same way the XPS 600 won't take a Core 2 CPU.

before i bought the Blackbird i asked if it will support Penryn.. also the motherboard it uses will support that processor with a bios update ..

Hopefully you got the promise in writing, because NO ONE can make such a promise without seeing what Intel's CPU support requirements are.

It would not surprise me if HP initiates a mainboard-replace program to support the new CPUs, as Dell did with the XPS 7xx series. It would be unprecedented for Intel to release a new CPU design and not require major modifications to the socket, voltage regulators, or both.

Penryn Motherboards http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=3138   My Blackbird Striker Extreme MB will take a Penryn as they told me before i bought the Blackbird Machine as this artical states.  with a Bios update
