Dell S2309W 1920x1080 Resolution Problem.

Good Day Everyone,

I had a question I was hoping to get some help with. I have an older Dell Inspirion 4400 that is running Windows XP SP2 with an Nvidia FX5200 PCI graphics card.  The drivers have been updated to version 6.14.11.7519 released on 5/16/2008.  I love the new widescreen monitor, it is beautiful, but I am having an issue when I set the resolution to 1920 x 1080.  When the monitor is set to this resolution, I have to scroll left to right and up and down to view the whole screen.  I have looked for an answer online but I haven't been able to find one. My guess is that the older FX5200 video card doesn't support this widescreen format, however, there is a choice for it in the drop down menu (1920x1080 Wide) so I am not quite sure that my assumption is correct.  Any help on the issue would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you for your time.

Regards,

Keith

Normally when you increase screen resoultion the screen actuall will appear to get smaller. Are you sure you do not have any accessibilities setting like magnifier turned on.

First of all... why are you still using XP SP2, when XP SP3 has been available for ages?

I'd advise you to download/install XP SP3 first of all :emotion-55:  That alone alone may help improve things?

Don't worry that it's a "Network Installation Package".   It's the one I've always used myself, and I've never had a problem with it :emotion-5:

Secondly... whilst it's often best to use drivers specifically provided by Dell, it's not so important to use their graphics drivers in a desktop system.

I'd therefore suggest you get the slightly newer v179.15 drivers direct off the Nvidia website.

Although they're old now as well (dated July 2008), they may further help with the problem you're having (which I admit is a strange one)?

I assume you have the monitor connected via a DVI[-D] cable, and that it's set to to run at a default 60Hz?

I'm having the same problem only with a Dell Dimension 8300 and a Dell 2408WFP monitor. I'm using an Nvidia GeForce FX5200-128MB video card and I updated the video driver to 175.19 at the Nvidia website. My monitor is new, Rev A01, and the only way I can view the entire screen is to drop the resolution to 1600x1200. I've tried every OSD tweak to no avail. If I run in 1:1 mode or Aspect mode I get an undistorted screen display with black bars on both sides. If I run in native 1920x1200 resolution I have to scroll to see the ends of the screen and taskbar. I've got a tech support ticket open with Dell but so far no solution. I'd like to run in native resolution so I can edit photos. Anyone out there have any ideas they'd care to share?  Thanks in advance for your time, attention and assistance.

Looks like the Dell tech is 100% correct. Good info.

HERE IS the Nvidia spec sheet on the card.

Nope. It turns out that my video card won't support the monitor's native 1920x1200 resolution using the DVI card. The only way I can run in native resolution is to use a VGA connection. I want to credit Tarun at Dell for finding a copy of my video card's manual, which outlines the supported video resolutions. So, I can run the monitor in 1600x1200 using the DVI connection, or in native 1920x1200 by using the VGA connection. I'd have to change the video card to run in native resolution using DVI.

To anyone else experiencing this problem ... check out your video card's supported resolution set. That should help you get squared away.

Thank you for the feedback everyone!  I have done everything suggested but still have the problem.  I have read more of the replies and have noticed another user having the same problem.  I also viewed the last link to the video card support sheet.  Thank you for helping me out, I guess it is time to look for another card.  Take care and thank you for everyone's time.

I just received the same monitor and my PC uses the same video card.  At 1920x1080 res via DVI, I have to move my cursor past the right edge of the screen to move the desktop to get to the clock and the same with the top edge to see the top of the desktop (there are no scroll bars).

I put in the monitor's drivers and updated the card's driver with the Nvidia drivers and I am currently running at 1280x1024 which looks OK, I guess.  It might seem a bit stretched left & right.

This morning, I tried connecting my new Zenith/LG 42" LCD TV (Z42LC6DF) via RGB/VGA and the Nvidia Control Panel made it a snap to set it up as a seperate monitor.  My desktop background image was repeated on the TV (but all the icons and the taskbar are only on the S2309W).  The TV is 1080p and I was able to set it to that res.  I  moved my GOM media player to the TV's screen and when I maximized the GOM player it filled just the TV's screen.  Full Screen mode also filled the TV's screen and I watched my first (avi) movie on my TV from the PC!

I think I will leave my set up the way it is for now.  The monitor looks fine and the screen seems HUGE after my 19" CRT!  The picture on the TV was very nice too.  I don't think the amount of improvement would be worth upgrading an AGP 8x video card.

Hi everyone,

I have just bought a new Dell S2309W with optimal 1920x1080 resolution and found the onboard graphics on my Dimension 3100 will not support. With only PCI slots available can someone tell me if the PNY GeForce 6200 256Mb PCI card will enable this resolution?

Clearly is the video card.  I realized my onboard Intel graphics engine didn't provide the right resolution before I bought the S2309W; sorry to say, I didn't even think to check the Dell forums before I bought a Zotac GeForce 5200 from Amazon.  Same issues - card does show this resolution, but desktop image extends above/below/right and left.  You have to pan to get anywhere.  Worst of all, I had to go to 1280 x 1024 in DVI mode (VGA wouldn't even seem to work).  The image now fits in the screen, but it is clearly squished vertically and stretched horizontally, with no fixes possible.

So now I'm looking at alternate video cards, and hope I can return my current card to Amazon.  I'm not sure the 6xxx nVidia would be much better, so my focus right now is on the 8400 series.  To make it worse, my motherboard only accepts PCI cards (no AGP or PCI-E slots).  So it's looking like $55-60.  Still, when I do hook up the S2309W to my laptop (using the VGA connection), everything works perfectly.  So it's not the Dell, it's the graphics card that's the limitation.  Live, learn, more research next time ...

Thanks for reply George – posted my plea some months ago and you are the first response, all sorted now, read on.

Bought the PNY GeForce 8400GS 512MB PCI Graphics Card from Misco and their tech guy was really helpful. Disabled on-board graphics and installed new card problem solved. Due to poor build of Dell machine only PCI available.

Must say at this point that Dell Support – of which I have 3 year extended warranty was an absolute waste of time. They only want to know if you are spending more money – you deal with a bunch of robots reading from a script – no help, no advice. Will not be purchasing anything more from Dell, their machines are not built to be upgraded – my machine which is under 3 years old will not out live the warranty period in terms of being able to upgrade the usual components as assumed.

Had a call from Dell as they are aware my warranty is ending soon wanting me to extend at a cost of over £100.00 – I asked if they could call me back.

They never returned my calls despite 4 messages left with regard the monitor problem – I had a call within an hour for extending the warranty – says it all for me.
