Dell USB Optical Mouse
Recently purchased a Dimension 8300 system with optical wheel mouse. The mouse works fine most of the time but intermittently the cursor will shoot off to a corner of the screen. I have seen an 'old' post where this was said to be a known problem with this mouse but no further information. Anyone know any more?.

i'm having the same problems, and have tried all different methods to fix it. right now, the mouse is just on a non-pourous, smooth, clean wood desktop, and it still flies all over the screen at times. it's terribly frustrating when trying to work in programs like illustrator and such. i'm really considering throwing this thing away and buying a microsoft optical (but not from dell). i've tried different mouse pads and such, with no luck. i've had this mouse for maybe 3 weeks, and has been doing this since day 1.
any reason why dell?
or should i use this thing for target practice?

I, too, am having the same problem with my Dell-branded USB optical mouse (M/N: M-UVDEL1). The pointer flies off to the upper corners of the screen, and it takes a few seconds to find it again. Dell, this is a recurring issue with a lot of customers. Do you have a solution? Are you even listening?

All,
If you go to the Dell Knowledge Base and look at document TT1057976 which describes the issues involved with the surface and any optical mouse.

i've looked at the document and did what was requested (cleaned the lens, even though the mouse is brand new, and again, tried different materials as a mouse pad). but it's still doing the same thing.
any other recommendations?

I was having the same problem described here - the mouse would jump to a corner of the screen for no reason. I tried different sufaces and mouse pads, I even tried 2 different mice that I knew were working properly. They behaved perfectly. I was ready to contact Dell to get a replacement mouse.
Then on one of the forum postings I read about someone solving the problem by cleaning the 'eye' with a dry cotton swab.
It seemed bizarre that a brand new mouse would need cleaning, but I did that and have had no problems since.
