re PSU: Maybe. Unhook any second HD, the FDD and opticals and you should be okay. What are you testing? Possible bad PSU or bad mobo?

Im testing the possibility of a bad motherboard but i am hoping it is a bad PSU, as the fans do not turn although a green light does appear on the motherboard itself.

 

The other thing is with the power cord connected to the power supply, a lower pitched whine can be heard, once the on/off button is pressed this goes up in pitch.

 

Do you think it maybe the power supply?

I'm on my way out right now so I don't have time to look, but I think you can short out the green wire on the 20 pin power connector and ground with a paper clip to see if the PSU comes on. Please do a search here to confirm that's the correct wire and how to test it before you do this. I know it's been posted more than once.

 

Of hand, it does sound like a bad PSU. Checking with a known good PSU will tell you for sure. I can't vouch for the 235Watter, but with the precautions you mentioned, it should be okay.... disclaimer... no guarantee from me. Others may tell you it's safe.

Right the Power Supply i have got has the wrong 12V connector on it for the Motherboard

 

Is this supply vital for the processor (I think it may be but please can someone advise me?)

Here's the pinouts for the PSU you'll need that will be compatible with the 4400. It's standard ATX with a 20 pin mobo connector. You can use a 20+4 pin connector by snapping off the extra 4 pins. Your major problem with other PSU's is that the 4400 doesn't have an on/off switch and if you get one with that, you'll have to cut a hole for it on the back of the 4400. If you just need a replacement 250Watter, you can get it from Dell for $39. There are other places on the web that have it for less, but you'll have to look around.

You will need the 4 pin (YYBB) 12V connector for the CPU.

Here's one link to shorting the green and black wire on the 20 pin connector to see if the PSU fan works. You can do a search (shorting green wire) for others.
