desktop icon removal

Help! I can't remove some unwanted icons from my desktop. I thought they were shortcuts, but I guess not. I keep getting an error message that says "Access denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use." What do I do now?

Dimension 8200, Windows XP Home, the icons are what I thought were shortcuts from programs. They were put there by me....

Is the program still running on this machine ? Have you tried shift + delete key together to delete the Icons on the desktop ?

Liza,

Provide some information on these points.

Which is the Operating system running on this system ?
What kind of icons are being shown up ?
When did you get these icons on desktop ? Had you been online and downloaded any applications ?
Any specific website being visited before this problem started ?

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Display, click the Desktop tab, and then click Customize Desktop.
3. Click to select the check boxes for the desktop items that you want to display, or click to clear the check boxes for the desktop items that you want to remove.
Try this and message me back

These miscellaneous desktop items are not listed under the customize button. These desktop icons I can't remove are, I believe programs instead of shortcuts, although they do have the little arrow on them. Any other suggestions?

The desktop wizard does not display these icons either. Desktop wizard doesn't clean these up......

Liza Sarinsky,

Right-click the icons and select "Properties." Does the General tab indicate that the icon is a shortcut? If so, what does the shortcut tab show as the target of the shortcut?

Click to select the check boxes for the desktop items that you want to display, or click to clear the check boxes for the desktop items that you want to remove.
There are no boxes for the icons I would like to remove. Any other suggestions?

Liza Sarinski,

That is the location of everything on the desktop. The item of interest is whether or not the icon is a shortcut, as shown here:
