Desktop Icons changed!

At some point today while I was online, I noticed that most of my desktop icons had changed and they are no longer little pictures. They are now little rectangles with a blue bar going across the top. Most of the icons in my Favorites menu did the same thing. What could have caused this? How do I get them back? I tried restarting the computer and that didn't do anything.

SusanJN,

Does the problem go away when you reboot your computer? If so, then this is pretty normal with windows. The icon cache file becomes corrupt during a windows session, but is recreated when you reboot. If you have TweakUI installed, you can use the repair option to rebuild the icon cache file wihtout having to reboot. You can also take a look at the following MS KnowledgeBase article:

I'm using Windows Me. Please don't tell me I have to mess around with the registry. I've already had to reinstall my entire operating system a few months ago due to another problem and I do not want to go through that again.

Reinstall your video driver. It seems to have become corrupt for whatever reason.

I did a search and it did not find anything named shelliconcache. Dell Support emailed me and told me to do a system restore but that didn't work either. Can I just leave them the way they are? I really don't want to do something to really mess up my computer.

I had 21 icons on my desk top. Like you, suddenly MOST (all but 5) appeared with a Windows Media icon (Square, yellow border, deep blue pointer) over the top of them. They still work as before when I click on them, but I feel like my system's been invaded and I don't know why. I tried the shelliconcache too and its reply was "nothing found".
