Desktop won't power up!!!!

Help! I shutdown my Dimension 4600 Series, Intel Pentium 4 Processor at 2.4GHz on tuesday night and now i can't power it up. Nothing happens. Tried changing the power cables, connecting directly to the power supply ... but nothing. Has anybody seen similar behavior? It's crazy because my warranty appears to have expired a month ago...Thanks in advance...

ak4600,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Plug the cpu directly into a wall socket by passing any surge protectors or power strips to see if the system will then power up.

That's funny, mine did the same thing on Monday. My warranty also ran out last month. I figured the power supply went bad. Having trouble finding the proper one to replace it with.

egg181.

The 4600 has an open back and will accept any standard ATX power supply.

ak4600.

What is the sequence of the diagnostic LEDs at the back of the case and is the LED in the power button, green, solid amber or flashing amber?

Ok this is really weird the same thing just happen to me today.  One year and one month to the day I bought it.  I wonder if I got the 2yr warranty would it have made it another year?  I went through all the technical support hoop jumping (doing things that i know wont make a bit of difference) only for them to tell me my motherboard is fried.  They did transfer me to some part sales department only to have them put me on hold and 3 minutes later a busy phone tone and then hung up on.  I think you might be on to something with the power supply I got out my volt meter and wasn't getting the voltage I thing I'm supose to suppose so Ill have to investigate this further.

This is really bad. I was thinking the same thing - would the 2yr warranty have made a difference! One wouldn't expect this from Dell but same problem for three people so far around the same time frame seems a little more than coincidence!!!

Did you actually get through to the customer support? How were they able to determine that your motherboard was fried? I haven't been able to get the number from the website!!

Yeah, they were fun, most of there customer service is done by flip books ( if this doesn't work ,next page LOL:smileyvery-happy:) and all done out of country. (I think India).  If you want to attempt to call the number is 1-800-624-9897.  Basically all he told me was to take all the cards and memory out and try to power up.  I also was told to pull the 20 pin power cable (p1) out and put back in.  If you try this remember to pull the power cord of back first for safety sake.  Since none of these things were able to light the led on the front or back he determined that the motherboard was dead (but I would love to see his electrical degree) I ended up just about striping the motherboard down to nothing and reinstalling everything to no avail.  I even took apart the power supply looking for the possibility of fuses in there but there was none.  Im having my brother in law come over sometime next week to look at it ill keep you all updated.
I would be curious in my machine there is a tiny led on the motherboard in the front bottom corner that lights up when i plug the power cord in,  do you have that

This is all my own fault,  we are in the process of buying a computer for my nieces and I explained to my mother that I own 3 dells and haven't had a problem with them.

How weird! We don't have answers yet, but my husband's Dell 4600 did this same thing last Wednesday. We were having DSL connect problems that day, so I powered his computer off and on several times to try and reset everything (SBC DSL modem and our 2Wire router). After doing this a couple of times, his computer wouldn't turn on at all. (His 1 year warranty expired in September of this year. )

He's had no prior problems with his Dell. So I got blamed for this of course. At first he thought (hopefully) it was just the power supply or even the power-on switch had shorted or gone bad. But he took the computer up to our local shop and they tested the switch and the power supply and they're fine.

None of the led lights on the front or back of his computer light up. But he does see that same tiny LED light on the motherboard in the front-bottom corner that danjane describes.

We've also owned 3 other Dell's and have recommended them to all our friends and relatives. But, I wonder if we can anymore? Please keep us informed if anyone comes up with solutions.

All these similar problems happening at the same time is very weird!!! I e-mailed tech support and they said to get some type of reading from 4 led lights. Only problem is my system doesn't have these lights!!! And yes, the only light I see is a tiny green light on the motherboard. It lights up as soon as you plug in the main plug. And it remains light for a while after unplugging!!! I will contact customer support via e-mail again today (unfortunately, I can only access my e-mail from work)
