Desperately Need Help with Video card for Dell Dimension E310
Hi,
I have an old Dell Dimension E310 with Windows XP and 2GB of memory on it and it worked great. I have just upgraded it to Windows 7 Home as XP is no longer supported. It seems working and the screen display looks fine. The problem now is that I can not even get the bubbles or 3D text...screensaver to work except Windows photo gallery pics. I can open up Solitaire but can barely play as it takes forever to move the card. A friend told me that the onboard video may be bad and I need a new video card. I bought and installed the Zotac Nvidia GeForce GT610 1GB DDR3, PCle 1x, DirectX 11- ZT-60607-10L but the PC halted and could not even load. So I took it off.
I do not want to spend lots of money on this. All I need is just a video card that at least does the very basic on the PC. I do not need it for gaming or anything like that (well, except playing solitaire). What video cards should I buy? Thank you!

If you spent anywhere near $100 to upgrade to Windows 7, you already spent too much on an older system like this. It would have been better to buy a refurbished computer around this cost that would be more up-to-date and come with Windows 7 installed.
Make sure you have the most recent bios version installed and check your video settings in the bios to make sure it is set correctly for a dedicated video card. You must also disable onboard video in the Device Manager first to get any card working. It is my understanding that the PCIe x1 GT 610 is simply not compatible with this older system though. If you can find a PCIe x1 HD 6450 or HD 5450 these may work. Otherwise, I would look at PCI cards instead.

My choice would be a PCIe x1 card. HERE is the HD 5450 that this person put in his E310 and it worked as described below.
Pros: My Dimension E310 only has PCI-e x1. I was using a PCI video card and was having trouble running dual 1080p monitors and Win7 32. This card cleared up the stuttering. Work, web and video now run smoothly.
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: Will probably buy another for my other E310 running Ubuntu 11.10

Go into BIOS F2 at Dell logo screen.
Maintenance settings
SERR DMI message to off
Then try zotac card.

I have an E310/3100 and can vouch for the PCIe-x1 card. They work very, very well.

I set DMI off but it still does not work. It prompts this message after I installed the card " Hardware Malfunction, Call your hardware vendor for support, parity check/ memory parity error, the system has halted". I have also attached a photo of Dell E310. Any help is appreciated.

AMD pci X1 cards don't give that error.
Swop for AMD.
