Device manager certain drivers yellow exclamation marks

OK I was looking through the hardware section of device manager and I have two drivers that have the yellow exclamation marks.

Both are in the Non Plug and Play Driver

1.

  ParPort Service and display name

  Root\Legacy-PARPORT\0000

  C:\Windows System32\drivers\Parport.sys

  Provider Microsft Corp.

  File version 5.1  xp sp2

  Copyright Microsoft

2.

   Serial

   Root\Legacy_Serial\0000

   C\Windows\System32\drivers\Serial.sys

   File version 5.1 xpsp  sp2

   Copyright:  Microsoft

Both of these in Device Status says

This deviceis not present is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed ( Code 24 ).

How do I go about repairing these if needed?

I am going to reformat soon but wanted to know how to deal with this issue first.

   >  Mentioned that I was going to reformat have done this before ( reformatting) Looking at the FAQ it said to install Sigmatell Drivers after Chipset but when I have put in Dell Resource CD after reformatting Sigamattel was not one of the devices that had a check mark by it

So do I install the Sigmatell driver if not detected and just the Sound audigy from that CD.

Sounds like the serial and parallel ports are not working.

Do you want to use them?

Are they enabled in the BIOS?

Did you try deleting them and letting them be redetected?

I don't know if they are enabled in the bios.   I booted into bios and did not know what to look for so could not find if it was on it or not.

So i just need to delete them then go to Control Panel-Printer and other hardware and check Manufactures list click  on want to install for device.

If not want to use them then fine to just delete them

they had SP2 on both so I thought it was something to do with  OS firewall.

What about when I reformat do I need to install Sigmatell driver on My PC if I don't have it.

If you don't want to use them, I would disable them in the BIOS first and then delete the devices if they still show up in Device Manager.

If you want them, you should check the BIOS first and enable them if they are not enabled.  Then you can delete them and scan for hardware changes.  They should be redetected (drivers already in Windows).

If you reformat, you need to install the all drivers (starting with the chipset driver if there is one).  If you machine is old enough, then the drivers might be built into XP already.  For newer machines, you have to install them.

The 9100 does not come with a parallel port and the serial port is an extra cost option (you have to buy the PS/2 and serial addon).  I would try just deleting the devices in Device Manager and see if they go away.  I presume you have not added serial/parallel ports to the machine.

You presume right about not addng the serial/parallel ports.

It did not have an option to delete so I disabled them both

   thanx for the help  dynamo
