Your computer takes up to 2 gigs of ram, using two slots.  You're maxed out now with the two 512 chips, but these could be replaced with 1 gig chips, albeit at some cost.  1 gis's not bad, why do you think you need more? This is not a bios issue but a chip slot issue.  Read this and the associated pages for lots of info from a great ram supplier: http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.asp?Mfr%2BProductline=Dell%2BDimension+%2F+Dimension+XPS&mfr=Dell&tabid=AM&model=Dimension+2400+Series&submit=Go

Where did you buy this chip?  All 2700 memory is not created equal.  That's why I only buy from crucial now; it's guaranteed to work.  I've tried other brands a couple times to save $5 or $10 and it's hit or miss.  More miss in my experience.  It's not worth the aggravation.  I've bought from crucial dozens of times for myself and clients/associates with nary a failure. Bios A05 is current so if you have a good 1 gig chip plus a 256 chip (or two 128's) you should be good to go.

I'm not sure all D2400s are the same.  If you look in the docs that Dell prints for this machine, the maximum memory is 2X512 MB for 1 GB total.  I have read posts that state the user has 2 GB in the machine, but this does not seem to be universal.
