dimension 2400 power supply

Question

Hi, I have a dimension 2400. When I try to boot the computer the power light on the front panel flashes amber. I read on this forum that it could be a problem with my psu. Unfortunately my warranty expired a couple of months ago, and I am looking to replace my power supply. So my question is, is the dimension 2400 power supply ATX compliant or do I have to buy a power supply from dell? Thanks for your help, Gautam

Do you mean the motherboard?? If that is the case, how do I go about isolating the problem?

It is completely standard ATX. There is another possibility for the flashing amber light - a failed mainboard.

Newer Dells can take a regular ATX power supply but not your system. You can call Dell spare parts for one, or PCPowerCooling makes replacement power supplies that work with older Dells. This one is recommended for your system:

Replace the power supply first - buy a decent one (say $40-50). It is indeed completely standard ATX - the chassis has an open back, so just about any standard PS will fit - Antec (Herolchi) power supplies are good, available just about anywhere (Best Buy, Staples, Circuit City). If the PS doesn't fix the issue, it's likely the system board - that, you will have to get from Dell.

Seems for every post stating that the Dimension 2400 PSU is standard ATX, there's another stating that it isn't!

Could Gautam1980 or anyone else who has actually carried out the replacement of a 2400 PSU please provide a definitive answer?

I replaced the power supply in my dimension 2400 with an Antec power supply(300w) that I picked up from circuit city. The power supply was standard ATX. Hope that helps.

I also have a 2400 and the psu is starting to die. Is there a max wattage that the system can handle? I'm looking to buy an Antec 350w basiq atx12v v2.01 psu and was wondering if a certain wattage could be too high for the system.

No limit, the Antec 350w power supply should work fine in your D-2400, providing the PSU, has a 20-pin or 20 + 4-pin main motherboard power connector.
