Dimension 2400 - Various Problems - Memory & Reinstallation

Lo Ppl...   Well.. where to start..   I've got a Dimension 2400 running Windows XP Home with SP2.   I've had the PC since the beginning of Nov 2004, and have always had the Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD) appearing and talking about Beginning Physical Dump of Memory.  At the time I let it slide because the machine was new and perhaps had a cpl of hiccups, but I seem to be getting the BSOD more and more often.  It always used to go on about Physical Memory Dump, but there was an occasion when it mentioned something about a Thread calling a file it didn't have permission to... which I thought rather odd.   I gave the Dell Diagnostics a go, and below is a cpl of the error messages I got when it started to check my memory... 'Error code 2F00:0B1C' 'Error code 2F2F:0119 System Memory Failure Read 00000002h, expected 00000000h at address 00114224h. Suspected memory component located on System board at label DIMM_2'   SO... in my infinite wisdom, I decided to backup my work and give the Reinstallation CD a go, to restore everything back to the factory settings.   However, when trying to use the CD, I will get the following error... 'Line 2649 of the INF file 	xtsetup.sif is invalid. Setup cannot continue. Press any key to exit'   Now I'm left with a formatted Hard Drive and no way to reinstall an OS onto it....   If anyone can help me sort this problem I'd be very grateful... otherwise back to the workshop it goes.   Cheers, Wil.

You've got a bad memory module that you'll need to address before you can reinstall.

Try reseating it first, and then re-running the Dell diagnostics. If it still won't pass, replace it - or call Dell for a warranty exchange on the module if you're still under warranty.

Tell us how much memory you have in your 2400.    If you have 512 you could try removing the memory in dim 2 and trying to reinstall again. You can find which one is dim 2 by checking under the Product Support tab at the top of the page and then going to Users Guides.   This would get you back up and running while you wait for a replacement Memory Module from Dell.  You really need at least 256meg of memory for windowsxp and 512 is much better but you can run it on 128 if you need to.

Sadly my Dimension 2400 has only got 256Mb RAM.   I've tried reseatting it, and have just tried moving it from 1 slot to the other, but still no go I'm afraid. Ok, check out the photo below and try one memory module at a time if you have forgot which one was in which slot. Only use one module and put it in the A slot testing both modules until you get one to boot up. It could also be that the slot B on the board is bad if both of the memory modules won't work.

Sorry mate.. bit of a misunderstanding I think...   My Dim 2400 has only the 1 x 256Mb Module.  I have tried it in both slots, but haven't got any further when trying to reinstall my OS.  I have no other Modules to replace or test to see which is at fault.  I will just have to contact Dell and seek a replacement module from them  :smileyhappy:
