Is it possible to instert a thrd harddrive on a Dell Dimension 4300 which already has 2HDs, CD Burner Drive, DVD/CD Drive and a 3 1/2 Floppy in place in the box?
DELL-Les - what is a controller card? I thought I just had to have space in the box. Like an oepn bay or something is this not the case? The drive I bought has all the ribbons and screws included its not a barebone package so I am aready to go right!
I'd like to put another spin on this issue. Even if you can add a third drive (and as it has been pointed out, you can), should you? YOu would really be taxing the power supply and cooling of the box. Here are some alternatives:
1. Replace one of the existing hard drives with a larger capacity drive.
2. Add a USB 2.0 card, and buy an external hard drive.
3. replace the two optical drives with a single combo drive, and mount the third hard drive
where the second optical drive would go (using 3.5" - 5.25" adapters).
I agree about the over heating and at the moment is my greatest concern. Since my last visit to the forum I have install the 3rd HD in my box in the following order:
Order TOP to BOTTOM Drive
- CD Burner Drive
- HD 3 (Cable Select)
- 3 1/2 Floppy
* The floppy is on bottom so that the cable originally connect to the DVD Drive would reach HD 3.
- HD1 (Primary)
- HD2 (Cable Select)
Anyway what would U suggest I do about cooling my system?
I was thinking of removing the green cover connected to the fan so that I might lower the temp. I dont expect this to reduce the temp much but maybe give the system increase air circulation. What do U think of this?

Removing the cover will cause the processor to overheat. The idea is that air is suctioned in the front and rear grill of the case (by the card cage) and then either 1) pulled over the processor and out the case via the case fan or 2) pulled over the power supply components and out the case via the power supply fan. Since the processor and power supply generate the most heat, the air is pulled over them last, so they don't heat up the other components.

Ok so a controller card is a female piece which acts like the electric plugs on the wall, right?
Can I remove one of my CD Drives like the DVD/CD Drive and Use my CD Burner Drive to read and write with? Do u for see any problems with this method?
If i do this should I be worried about over heating since my box would be stacked in the following order:
Order TOP to BOTTOM Drive
- HD3 (Slave)
- CD Burner Drive
- 3 1/2 Floppy
* The following two maybe switched (TOP or BOTTOM) I cant recall what there order is currently
- HD1 (Primary)
- HD2 (Slave)
So will this order work because it doesnt look as thought the 3 1/2 Floppy can be moved or I would have the order go CD, Floppy, HD1, HD2, HD3.
Thoughts and suggestions...........
