Dimension 4400: Cannot Boot from anything...
(Just found the edit button!)...
My Dell won't boot from HDD or Windows XP Retail CD... read the second reply for details...

First step is to try and clear your NVRAM. This link here<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>explains how to do it on your model. This procedure is useful in resolving boot up problems.

As I said, not only did I set the CD Drive to the the first drive in the boot sequence, I also set it to be the only drive in the boot sequence. But it didn't work.
Samething when I tried the newly cloned HDD.

(Sorry my PC is freakin' out and I don't see an edit button anywhere...)
I just inhereted this Dimension 4400 without any CDs or anything. It already had Windows XP Home, but I want to upgrade to Pro using my own CDs. But it just won't boot from the CD... (It worked fine on my PC). So I took out the harddrive and created a clone on my own HDD using Norton Ghost and now it won't even boot from the HD. Even if disable every other boot option it still won't boot. It gives me an error like this "No boot device detected: System Halted!" and then nothing.
Mind you both the XP CD and the Dell HDD work fine with my own PC. And I haven't tried booting the Dell with a floppy yet... but I don't know if that'll help me.

Did you go into the BIOS and set the CD-ROM drive as the first boot device? Note that if you have 2 CD/DVD drives try each one.

Is the CD - Drive detected in IDE section of the BIOS?

Yes it does, and so does the HDD.

NO BOOT from anything, usually is a MOTHERBOARD or controllers.....and yes, memory can be an issue, reseat memory, or swap like-king memory, just to be sure here.
I know bios shows the devices, but without other details here, can't help any further... good luck...
not an easy one to fathom... but I know, I have seen this one
