Dimension 4550

Question

Hi!!

I would like to know if i have to download another BIOS for my Dimension 4550 if i change my processor (P4 2.0ghz) to a Pentium 4 HT 3.06 ghz. Ihave the BIOS version "A08"; do this version is HT enable for my Dimension 4550???

The latest version of your BIOS is version A08, but even with earlier versions, the 4550 supports HT processors. As soon as you install a HT enabled CPU, the option enable or disable HT will show up in the BIOS.

even for the 4550's that were built before the 3.06HT was released?

You need at least BIOS version A01 which was the first BIOS release to support hyperthreading.  I doubt that they sold any with version A0. Steve

I bought a 4550 last year with a 3.06GHz Processor. The system's obsolete, but it still runs everything O.K. The BIOS my system uses has A05 in it. You may want to update your BIOS to the latest revision. Remember, you'll still be stuck with the 533MHz system bus as the 4550 does not support the 800MHz bus. The only difference between the 4500 and 4550 is slightly faster memory speed.

Maverick, whatever you're running now is going to be obsolete soon too, and whatever you buy to replace it is going to eventually be obsolete too. So you still have plenty of freaking out to do. I can see it now....you're going to go out and spend $800 on upgrading to the P4EE chip because you're convinced that it makes the 3.2C 'obsolete'
