dimension 8300 drivers (mainly ethernet controller)
So i recently had to reinstall windows xp home on a dell dimension 8300 and some of the drivers did not get installed. My main concern is getting the ethernet controller working. I dl'd and installed the intel chipset driver on the computer and then tried installing the Broadcom Ethernet drivers but it still does not recognize that they are installed. I restarted and still the computer does not recognize an Ethernet Controller driver. So how do i do it? Is there a certain order? Or what? Please Help! Thanks

When Windows is installed, it is imperative that the Intel Chipset Driver be the first driver installed. Without it many of the other drivers will not install properly, or at all. The order generally is chipset, video, network, and sound. The only exception to that order is that the Desktop System Software should be installed before anything else if that file is available for the computer. I did all of that and got all of the other drivers installed but for some reason it does not recognize the ethernet controller driver when I install it. I even found the drivers disk that came with the computer and tried to search for it on there but still no luck. I have no idea where to go from here.

Which driver file are you attempting to install? According to the support page there are two possibilities. Most Dimension 8300s were equipped with an on-board Broadcom chip, but there are some that used Intel instead. Are you sure you're trying to install the correct driver? One way to check is to click on support and select System Configuration from the support menu that appears in the column on the left; you get an abbreviated version of the packing list which sometimes mentions the Ethernet adapter.

and i don't know if this changes anything but it is running xp professional not home
