Dimension 8300 video problem

I'm afraid I can't swap it as the only other computer I have is a laptop.

I suspect the video card is the culprit.   Can you swap it out in another computer or install a different card in your computer to confirm?

What drivers are you trying to load?

 

XP has drivers for the fx5500 (edit: fx5200)

Uninstall the drivers you installed, reboot, and let xp load and install the card & drivers.

Not really as they all have laptops or Apples!

I was just reloading the drivers which were installed when the system was built, the Rev A06 drivers.  The drivers which WinXP installed didn't allow me to run the card at 1280x1024.

Just a quick update - I uninstalled the Dell nVidia drivers and installed the WinXp drivers instead.  Same result. 

 

I've also just noticed in the last hour that when the monitor screen goes blank, the power button goes from green to orange, presumably meaning that there's no video signal coming from the card.

I suggest you run the Dell diagnostics for the video. It looks like the card may be dying. If still under warranty, Dell should replace.

 

Yea, I did that earlier but apparently it can only detect what type of card is there, and not whether it's faulty.  Very strange.

Just two thoughts:

 

Have you run dxdiag out of your run box to see if there is a problem?

 

Finally you might try new drivers from www.nvidia.com .

 

Like I said in my first post, I think the card is failing and no driver in the world can fix that.

Thanks for all of your advice, but I think you're getting a bit more technical than I understand now! :smileysurprised: What's a "run box"?!

 

It's getting a bit late here (UK) and I've been to the pub too!  I'll check nvidia's website tomorrow, but I think your diagnosis that the card is failing is probably along the right lines.  Luckily I have a 3 year on-site warranty, of which there is around 8 months left.

 

Actually it's not even that - video cards are cheap nowadays - it's just the sheer inconvenience of it all.

Click start on taskbar lower left corner.  When box opens, you'll see the word run.  click on it, and the run box will open.

 

Type dxdiag into the box. 

 

This is simply a direct x diagnostic.

 

It will tell you if you're encountering any direct x problems.

Have you managed to cure the problem yet?  I had exactly the same.    My Dimension 8300 is approximately same age as yours. Have now got a new video card and all seems to be working ok.  Had to reinstall Windows though before new card was sent!!!

Still working through to get computer back to state it was in before the failure.

Hope you can sort yours out.
