My processor is so slow and old. The monitor works fine. Should I replace both or can I just get another CPU and would there be a compatibility problem?
You will most likely be able to connect your old monitor to a new computer. The new computer has to have the type of video connector that your old monitor requires. The connector is likely a VGA type which most, but not all, new computers have. However there are some wide perspective Dell monitors that do not get along well with Windows 7 such as the 228wfp and so the image end up looking dostortd. If you state the model number of the monitor you are wondering about then you would get a more definitive answer regarding compatibility of your paticulat monitor with a new computer.

Processors do not slow down with age. The 8400 is too old to think about Upgrading CPU its like a GX280 Optiplex.
You can get a newer Optiplex 620 TOWER for $99 and they can come with DUAL CORE pentium D.
Newer models like the 745 AND 755 are even faster with Core 2 duo and 1066MHZ fsb.
