Dimension 8400 Graphics card problem!!

Question

Hi All

I was hoping someone might be able to help.

I have just tried upgrading the graphics card on my 8400. Am upgrading to a GeForce 7600GT.

Have uninstalled the old drivers and installed my new graphics card however it is not working.

When I power on the PC I get a black screen and the following in the top left corner:

GeForce 7600 GT VGA BIOS

Version 5.73.22.51.11

256MB RAM

Have tried putting the old card back in but am getting the same message (this time with the X300 details rather than the 7600 one's)

Have looked around but not found anything that can help so far!!

In case anyone else has this problem it was not an issue with the Graphics card but with my memory modules.

After removing all RAM modules and re-inserting them system booted up fine, was able to install the graphics card drivers and everything is looking good at the moment!

I uninstalled the old drivers and then made sure all ATI folders were deleted. I downloaded the new drivers but left them in 'My documents',   Then took out the old card and put the new one in and booted.   Didn't run the driver cleaner thou and haven't had a chance to install the new driver as windows will not load.   Is there anything I can do, just got black screen and flashing cursor.

Before I do that when I was removing the ATI drivers the NVIDIA guide I had said to make sure that the microsoft generic drivers were installed after the ATI one's were removed, so I did this and installed the microsoft drivers.   Should I carry out the steps you suggested still?

No, it doesn't seem to do anything.   As soon as the power button is pressed to turn it on this message comes up and doesn't do anything else.. have left it for over half an hour but no change

Not clear on this.  You tried to tap on the F5 key as it was booting up, but it did not go into safe mode correct  ?   Do you have a windows xp os cd by chance  ? Message Edited by SR45 on 12-01-200607:44 PM

Just wanted your advice before I do anything.   Months ago I added 1GB of crucial RAM to my PC and have had no problems. When I was looking through how to install the graphics card I noticed I had put the RAM in wrong, I had 512 in slots 1 and 3 2 while 2 and 4 had 256 in them.   I changed them to how they should be when I changed the card and the PC would not boot. I took the 256 RAM modules out again again and it worked.   I then put the 256 RAM back in and because the error was different this time I thought nothing of it.   Now thou my PC has booted after taking out the 256 modules again. Is there any reason why the PC won't boot with them in? It was fine when they were not in correctly.   Also I have now got into the BIOS as it booted, is there anything I should do before I continue and load windows??   Many thanks for your help

One more time. Turn off the computer, than back on. As it is booting, click the F-5 key continuously to try again to get into a display that gives you an option to select Safe Mode that will load only the necessary microsoft generic drivers to get things started. This way you can try again with the X300 card, make sure the driver for it is installed, not the nvidia driver. See what happens.

Going from an ATI card to a nVidia card, you have to uninstall the old driver, use a driver cleaner, than install the new card and nvidia driver. Did you do this by chance ?

I'm hoping that you did not loosen the memory or something else when you exchanged cards.  Take a little time to make sure everything is connected correctly, and the cards, memory sticks are all firmly seated.  Other than that, and if you cannot get into Safe Mode, than perhaps trying a reinstall of windows.   If you reinstall windows, and it actually starts the process, why don't you leave the nvidia card in and not the ati one.    Very best of luck to you.  Perhaps someone else that has gone through this before can assist.
