Dimension 8400 Network Adapter not functioning

I am trying to fix my friend's Dimension 8400. His computer is no longer under warranty, and Dell will not fix it, so I'm hopeful someone here can help me with this problem. Long story short, the hard drive died (along with the partition with the drivers). I installed a new SATA hard drive and burnt all the drivers listed on Dell's website for the 8400 onto a CD. I installed Windows XP Pro, uploaded the drivers to the computer, and installed them. Everything was working fine until I tried to install Service Pack 2. After I restarted the computer at the end of the installation of SP2, the network adapter simply stopped working. I tried to reinstall the Broadcom 570x Gigabit Ethernet driver, which is what the Dell site says should be installed, but it would not recognize that as the correct driver. In a final effort, I attempted to simply uninstall the device altogether through device manager, but now it refuses to acknowledge that the ethernet port exists at all.

When I rolled the system back to before the installation of SP2, the ethernet port worked properly.

Also, the network adapter in question is the onboard ethernet port that came with the machine.

Does anyone have any suggestions or (hopefully) a possible solution?
