Dimension XPS-T memory upgrade problem

Hi,

My system is the Dell Dimension XPS Txxxr-Series with a Pentium III 750MHz.  Recently, I purchase a 256MB PC100 ECC Registered SDRAM DIMMs Memory for upgrading.  However, after I install the new memory, I receive a 1-3-3-1 POST beep code, which indicates my new memory is not working.  I have read my system reference book carefully.  The system requires only the 3.3-volt 100 MHz DIMMs.  I am sure I use the right memory and install the memory correctly.  I just wonder whether the Dell memory is the only memory suitable for the Dell system.  Please help me to solve the problem.

metrostar,

There is no such thing as Dell memory, but Dell computers are very picky about memory.  The forum regulars recommend memory from www.crucial.com.  Crucial gaurantee's that their memory will work if you use the memory selector on their site to select the memory.  The prices are generally much better than Dell's prices too, and Dell may in fact be selling the same memory (Crucial is a division of Micron).

Yup, usually its only Dell memory that works. My Inspiron is almost the same as a Dimension and I had to buy from Dell memory upgrades.

Checking your system specs , the memory that you are trying to install is indeed correct in terms of specs. Concerning your question, the Dell memory is NOT the only memory that is suitable for your system. You could actually use other brands but sometimes, of course, there could be some incompatibility issues. Have you also considered that the memory you purchased maybe bad? Have you tried inserting the memory you purchased on another slot?

You can buy memory for the XPS series, that's guaranteed to work and has a lifetime warranty from the following.

Hi,

Thanks for the previous replies.  I am not sure whether the memory I purchased is bad or not, and it just looks brand new.  I have tried to insert the memory in all three of my slots, even the slot that the original one memory occupies.

By the way, does anyone know where I can purchase the 3.3-volt 100MHz ECC DIMMs for my Dell Dimension XPS T700r-Series?  I need a garantee that the memory I purchase is working in the system, which fulfill the following requirements (I already bought and tried some of the major brand name products but just not working in my computer):

Architecture:  ECC SDRAM modules

DIMM sockets: three; gold contacts

DIMM capacities: 32, 64, 128, and 256 MB

Clock cycle: 10 ns (supports 4 clocks only)

CAS latency: three

SPD revision: 1.2A

Buffering: unbuffered

Voltage: 3.3 V

Data bus width: 8 bits

BIOS address: E8000h - FFFFFFh

Of course, I wish I can buy it in a price as cheap as possible.  Please reply me if you got any information.  Thank you.

Did you try Crucial for your memory, as recommended.    The so called ValuRam memory may not work in a Dell system, this fact has been posted on these boards countless times.     I have purchased memory modules from Crucial for different Dell models over several years without any problems.  You can contact Crucial, either by eMail or phone, if you wish to inquire about your memory requirements.
