Disabling Serial Ports

I have a Dimension 8300, A07 Bios, running Windows XP Home. Would like to disable all serial ports, and run a Belkin USB to Serial Adapter. The modem is all I have on the com ports, and I don't use it as I have cable modem. I have an embroidery machine which runs on com 1, but I can't get it to connect, as the modem interferes. Is this procedure possible.

You can disable the Serial Port in the BIOS Setup.  That option can be found under the Integrated Device heading of the BIOS. 
 
If you still encounter problems in what you are trying to do then consider posting in the Dimension - External Peripheral forum.  Someone visiting that forum may have run across the problem before and knows of an answer.
