DRIVER INSTALLATION IMPOSSIBLE (to me)!!!

Hello. Can anyone help please?
After a fresh installation of WIN XP Home SP2 on my DELL Dimension 2400, I am now in the process of updating/installing new drivers downloaded from dell.com.
The chipset driver already installed successfuly. To install display device driver, when i reach the display properties, settings, advanced, monitor, the button "properties" is disabled. surprisingly the monitor type is set to default monitor, display resolution is set to 640x480 pxls only.

I am now stuck here with no broadband access because AOL broadband requires to have higher resolution. I would appreciate if anyone could tell me where to go from here?

or if you had installed an aftermarket videocard.

go to nvidia.com for nvidia card drivers

go to ati.com for ati card drivers

Thanks,
I have the right driver, downloaded unziped and ready for installation. My problem is to reach the "update driver" in Monitor properties because the "properties" button is disabled.

if the file that you had unzipped got the setup.exe file, double-click on it.

I did run the setup.exe file as you advised, which brought the InstallShield Wizard on; but still the monitor is set to default monitor and display resolution is still lowest. I think the question here is: "How to do I get XP recognise plug and play monitor?" Thx 4 helping.
